576i Shows Displaying in 4:3 on Android

Hi,

I have a rather major issue with Plex DVR and Live TV. It seems that all of my content that is 576i is displaying in 4:3 on Android and Android TV, but fine on Plex Web and Apple TV.

I can fix this by forcing a transcode by lowering the H.264 level, but this introduced stuttering issues as my server is slightly underpowered.

I’ve seen other threads with people with the same problem, and they get no reply. I love Plex DVR, but this is potentially a deal breaker for me. I’m sorry for doing this, but @kinoCharlino, I would really appreciate some input (e.g. is there an internal ticket for this), or if this question would be better directed towards the Android Team, as every other thread has been missed / ignored.

Here is the XML file for a recorded show with the incorrect aspect ratio: https://pastebin.com/iafhVs1L

Anyone got any ideas? Workarounds? This is rather urgent as it is preventing me from switching to Plex DVR completely. I also should note that this does not affect HD channels, only those in 576i. It also displays in 16:9 for a second, before reverting to 4:3.

hi

Sorry not got any ideas but I’m seeing the same with issues but only with recorded content. I can tune to a live channel and aspect ratio is fine. I record the show and its forcing to 4:3 on play back. I’ve seen this when playing back via Web, Roku, Android. However if i use Plex Media Player on Windows 10 that’s is fine, attached are screenshots from the Web and PMP from same device of the same recording.

I’m in the UK and had no issues with HD content.

Thanks

Hawcapl

Do you have Hardware Transcoding enabled?

I am in the UK and if i enable H/W transcoding then my recordings all play back as 4:3, disable this and they correctly play as 16:9

Hi

yes I do (did) have h/w transcoding enabled, disabled and all working, hope that helps you @shea9872

Good to hear disabling that fixed it for you

Hmm, I already disabled ‘Use hardware acceleration when available’, but is there another option I need to change?

Edit: I tried enabling HW transcoding, and now my recordings are in the correct aspect, but the live TV still isn’t.

So just gone back this morning and check and previous recordings play fine now as well with HW encoding disabled, and live tv both HD and SD work fine. I originally thought might be the commercial removal causing issues so played with different recordings so why I’ve rechecked. This is what I have setup in transcoder settings.

I’m running Server version 1.12.2.4929, if that helps.

Hmm, my transcode settings look similar, except I enabled HW transcode, as I explained above. Not sure what to do from here. Thanks for the help though.

Might need a Plex expert to check the details on the media file you posted

Only thing i can think of to try, is go into Settings on the Android app, then Advanced/Playback, there is an option here to use the Android Media Player, I know they changed the playback engine a few updates ago, perhaps the default Android one will work better for you

Just a though though, not sure if it will fix or not

This issue doesn’t appear to be with recorded shows now - when I re-enabled HW transcoding that issue was solved. The issue I am having is with live TV, I find it strange that my recorded shows now appear fine, but the live stuff doesn’t.

@shea9872, we do have some internal bug tickets filed for this issue, though not exclusively for 576i. Could you provide me full PMS logs, media sample being played, and if you can a smartphone recording of the screen during playback. Thank you.

@shea9872, I found the internal bug ticket for the exact issue you are experiencing covering the same region. This is an ffmpeg issue and it’s been triaged and assigned to a transcoding engineer who is investigating it.

Awesome. Do you still need the logs, samples and the recording? Also, I can help out if you need a tester or something.

Considering they’re already digging into it, I don’t think we’ll need logs and samples anymore unless engineering specifically request it. I’ve referenced this thread in the ticket as well. Thanks!

Quick question, will there be any updates on this shared (when they happen of course), or will we just have to wait and see?
