5N Drobo PMS wont allow access after updating!

Server Version#:Cannot Access
Player Version#:

I just updated my 5N Drobo, new firmware, new DD software and a few other apps were saying they needed updating including the Plex Media Server.

After the upgrade/Update I now can not access my media. The App shows as running but the Plex clients show the PMS as being Offline so it wont allow access. Even within the Drobo App when clicking on the settings gear wheel, it opens the 192.168.etc link in a browser but again no access! Nor with the Web server client too.

I have tried rebooting the Drobo 5N & the broadband router several times, turning the PMS drobo App off and back on, to no avail.

It had been working perfectly fine before that and I dont really want to uninstall it as when I tried that in the past it loses all my settings and what films I had watched and where I had gotten up to in series etc.

It seems like everytime there is an update to the Drobo Plex App it causes problems. I was subscribed to Plex pass previously but cancelled it after the last time i had problems like this.

I love the plex user interface and plex itself but this is getting beyond a joke, every time there is an update they mess it up, this time I cant even access the App to see what settings have been changed or what version it is etc.

It would be handy if there were a button to go back to previous versions within the Drobo Dashboard but there isn’t.

This is my first post here as I have managed to fix problems myself in the past from reading on various forums but this time I have no access to be able to do anything!

Can anyone help with this? I’m going to start looking for an alternate media server if not.

Hi @Justiplex I will take a look at our Drobo 5N in our QA lab and see if I can reproduce. I Personally tested upgrading from PMS 1.14.1 to the new 1.15.0 on our Drobo and didn’t have issues, but there may have been a case we missed.

Do you mind seeing if PMS 1.14.1 works for you first? and then if that is successful, then outline what you are doing when upgrading to 1.15.0 and provide PMS logs (https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/) if it fails again.

On a side note, the latest Drobo 5n2 Firmware update bricked my box. Currently FTP’d into it copying things off for what I assume will become a complete reinstall. You might want to make sure you’re able to access your Drobo file structure outside of Plex as well.

I have the original 5N from when it was first available, everything else seems to be running fine after the DD & firmware update, the plex was working after it too until I updated the Plex itself. I can access all my files via the network etc. I just have no access to the PMS, it shows as running within the 5N DD but shows as offline when trying to access from Plex clients, Amazon Fire TV, iPad, Iphone and the Plex.tv web site.

Its just plex that encounters issues with almost every update. I’m getting to a point of giving up on it, it takes so much of my time up rectifying and to update, reading forums, then doing the actual things that need doing. I have an online business to run which puts me in front of a computer most of the day, last thing i want is more screen time tbh lol

I’m going to try this one last time and reinstall an older version as chrisallen suggests. I’m not a very technical person but can get by enough usually, I hate wasting time on things that should just work.

Thanks for your reply too btw

A small suggestion is to stick to the stable builds in the future - beta builds are less tested and if you don’t want to deal with stability issues it might be a better experience for you that way. We will investigate your issue in our lab as well. Sorry for the issues you’re having.

I am also having issues with PMS and the latest Drobo5N updates. Working fine 2 nights ago, post update to firmware, and Plex in DD will not start. Tried uninstalling, restarting, and re-installing PMS from DD, and also a manual install from plex.tv.

Did you find a fix? I’m having a similar issue…

I’m looking into this issue, but I was not able to reproduce last time.

Mine is still currently down. Is there something I can do to try to fix it? Is there some kind of diagnostic I can run?

I spent some time this after noon trying to reproduce this issue. I had PMS 1.14.1.5488. installed on our Drobo 5N, then updated the firmware to version 4.1.4-8.120.108863. After which I manually updated Plex to version 1.15.1.791-8bec0f76c by downloading the plex.tgz file and placing it in the DroboApps share, then rebooting the Drobo.

Here is the SSH output showing the model of Drobo, the firmware version, and PMS version running;

Drobo-5N:~/Shares/DroboApps # wget -qO- localhost:32400/identity
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<MediaContainer size="0" machineIdentifier="e7082abe5f1150da6ce6c50920f19d00c69f9cda" startState="startingPlugins" version="1.15.1.791-8bec0f76c">
</MediaContainer>
Drobo-5N:~/Shares/DroboApps # cat /sys/bus/scsi/devices/0:0:0:0/model|xargs
5N
4.1.4-8.120.108863

If you want to try manually upgrading via SSH, you can do so by installing the OpenSSH package from the app store, then running the following commands after connecting via SSH to the NAS;

Drobo-5N:~ # sudo -i
Drobo-5N:~ # cd /mnt/DroboFS/Shares/DroboApps
Drobo-5N:~ # wget --trust-server-names https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-media-server-new/1.15.1.791-8bec0f76c/drobo/plex.tgz
Drobo-5N:~ # DroboApps.sh stop_app plex
Drobo-5N:~ # DroboApps.sh install

I’m having a similar problem where the Plex app on the Drobo5n will not start. I have tried uninstalling, restarting the dobo etc…

The app works fine from my PC…just not the drobo

I am having a similar issue. Last week I was having finding my plex server which is on my Drobo. I noticed an update to my Drobo so I installed it and now when I have started looking more deeply into it The App dose not start at all. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. Still nothing.

Sooo it seems like there is a real issue here if this many people are having it. I tried following your directions above but when I try to uninstall the app I went to the actual DroboApps location the some of the Plex folders are still there. When I tried to manually delete them I get a message “The operation can’t be completed because the item “Crash Reports” is in use.”

It seems like the two companies aren’t communicating well and need to get with each other and resolve this issue. We are paying customers and I believe we deserve better support then what we are getting from each side.

My 5n isnt working as well. I dont understand half of what you guys are talking about though. After I did an update to my dash board i am unable to see it from any devices on my network. I have cycled power power to all my network equipment, but still nothing. If i connect my laptop directly to it i can then see it. Though in the dashboard it says Plex is running, it isnt. And it shows several other apps require updates. None of them actually update though. DroboAccess, MSQL, DroboPix, and MyDrobo, do not run or update.

This is becoming a real nuisance.

Thank you Wingman for your answer but why is it happening again now. And Will The same steps work? Some answers from the company would be good.

I asked this question 27 days ago and I still do not have an answer. Can I please get an answer on this.

Same issue here. Cannot access Plex at all, through IP address or through settings in the drobo app.

Ditto. Drobo5N, firmware 4.1.4-8.120.108863, Plex is apparently at the latest version listed in DroboApps since I’m not getting bugged to update it.

I was unable to reproduce this issue on our Drobo 5N last time I checked this issue. Would those affected, mind manually grabbing the PMS logs off the device after rebooting? They may shed some light on why PMS is no longer starting up or available for you.

I am going to factory reset our Drobo 5N and attempt to reproduce PMS not running or starting after rebooting.

EDIT: I still cannot reproduce the startup issues reported in this thread.

  1. I Factory reset the Drobo 5N and then manually updated it’s firmware to 4.1.4-8.120.108863
  2. I installed PMS 1.14.1 from the DroboApps store and it worked correctly.
  3. I Setup SSH access and then manually upgraded PMS to version 1.15.6 using the following steps
Drobo-5N:~ # sudo -i
Drobo-5N:~ # cd /mnt/DroboFS/Shares/DroboApps
Drobo-5N:~ # wget --trust-server-names https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-media-server-new/1.15.8.1163-005053bb5/drobo/plex.tgz
Drobo-5N:~ # DroboApps.sh install

I am successfully running PMS 1.15.6 on the Drobo and it starts after rebooting the NAS.

NOTE: One issue is that the Drobo Dashboard still reports an update available which is in fact the older version 1.14.1. I have reached out to Drobo to see if they can reduce the delay in PMS updates being available in their DroboApps store.

So I just checked that my Drobo5N is on firmware 4.1.4-8.120.108863 (it is), and then upgraded using the bash commands you provided. Still nada. Not only that, but the PMS Logs directory is completely empty—I emptied it out, rebooted the Drobo, and manually started PMS since for some reason it wasn’t starting on its own. Problem is still there, and the logs dir is empty.

EDIT: FWIW, I can’t seem to stop PMS through the Drobo Dashboard once I’ve (supposedly) started it.

EDIT 2: When connected to the Drobo via SSH, running ps -A shows one obviously-Plex-related process - “Plex Media Serv” (sic).
