In the discussions surrounding the introduction of Plex Cloud, I have come across repeated assertions that Amazon Drive is the cheapest unlimited storage service.
At first glance this appears to be true, but I believe that a far larger number of Plex Pass customers, and potential future Plex Pass customers, already have unlimited Google Drive storage.
A massive number of people already use the Google Apps for Work product for at least one of their domains. Officially, if you pay just $10 a month for one user, you receive only 1TB of Google Drive storage, but if you have five users (paying $10 a month each) they all receive unlimited Google Drive storage. Actually, unofficially, Google extend the unlimited storage to everyone, even single-user accounts.
Many Google Drive users don’t even notice this as, under normal circumstances, most people would use only a fraction of the supposed 1TB, but it has been widely noted for several years now that, if you look after a few weeks as a customer, your storage has been quietly upgraded to unlimited.
At $10 a month, this is obviously more expensive than Amazon Drive’s $60 a year, but this ignores the tens of millions of people already using Googles Apps for the email feature and receiving the unlimited storage for free.
I think it would be smart to extend Plex Cloud to Google Drive as soon as possible, not only because it would be an attractive option to a large number of potential new Plex Pass customers but, also, because it introduces an element of competition between Amazon Drive and Google Drive, making it less likely that either will pull the plug on Plex.
