A few questions about Plex Pass

Hello everyone,
I have a few questions before buying Plex Pass.
I’ve been with the free Plex for several years now and it works great but it’s time to upgrade so before I do so I’d appreciate it if you could answer a few questions for which I haven’t found a definitive answer.

  1. When I buy a Plex Pass, does it link to my account or the server? Does this mean the Pass will apply to the server with which the account is connected?

  2. According to what I understand, the Pass will apply to all the “Home” users I created that are linked to the same account. When I share with friends who have another Plex account while they watching content through my server, do the Pass features work on them? Or do they also have to buy a Pass?

  3. In addition to the previous question, the mobile apps currently require payment to watch. When I buy a Pass it will open but for whom exactly? To only those who are connected to the same account that is linked to the server? Or to everyone I share the server with?

  4. When buying Plex Pass do I need to install a different version of PMS? Or is it the same version and everything opens automatically? My installation is on a FreeBSD jail.

  5. Plex Pass has the option to skip the intro, how does it work? Is there a way to set it manually? Is it automatic only?

Side questions
At the moment, when an episode ends, you have to wait for the file to end so that it starts a new episode automatically, is there a way in Plex Pass or even in the free version to set it to be like in Netflix, already in the credits, it will count 5…4…etc and starts automatically the next one and there will be no need to wait to the end of the file?

And one last question, is there a way to configure on the AppleTV that the Plex profiles will be linked to the AppleTV/ID profiles and then when I change a profile in the AppleTV system then when I open the Plex app it will also switch the profile there without the need to change manually?

Thanks in advance
Itay

Server Version#: 1.27.2.5929

  1. To the account. Yes.
  2. No. They need a PP themselves.
  3. For all your “managed users” (i.e. those you created inside your own account for your family members). It may also work for regular Plex accounts which you invited into your Plex Home, but that may no longer work for newer accounts.
  4. No. You should only wait an hour after buying the PP, then restart your Plex server.
  5. By comparing the audio of all episodes within a season. If there is a portion which sounds the same for the majority of episodes (i.e. the title song), then this is considered the intro. There is no way to manually define the begin and end of the intro.
  • nope
  • I don’t know, but probably not.

Thank you for the reply

No, but this is a feature Plex could add. That would be nice. Make a Feature Suggestions post!

let’s hope that it will be added.

For your question number 2

I believe the friends you share a sever with will now be able to use the download feature if you have a Plex Pass.

That would be the one benefit I can’t think of that wouldn’t require them to have a Plex Pass

I don’t really use downloads so if I’m wrong about that someone please correct me

Ok, and also if so can’t care less because I don’t allow downloads from my server…

The downloads feature is anticipated to require users to have a Plex Pass. It doesn’t seem to be mandatory at this time, at least not for old accounts.

https://support.plex.tv/articles/downloads-overview/

Basically, get Plex Pass if you want it for yourself and for your server.
Don’t get it hoping to provide the same benefits to your friends.

And just to mention it now … don’t use “Managed Users” or “Home” accounts for your friends. Don’t log into other devices with your account, don’t “Link” their devices to your account with a code. From a security perspective those are only suitable for in-home use with people you trust.

I’m suspicious Plex changed the requirement without announcing it first.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/w5oi5q/new_plex_shared_user_need_plex_pass_to_download/

I created a new account and could not download. Grandfathered accounts are still working.

It was actually part of the initial announcement when the new download feature was released ~ 1 year ago. IIRC there’s a dedicated section about this in the related support articles.

I meant announcing the cutoff date, not announcing that downloads will require Plex Pass in the future.

The FAQ support article still states:

When will new users need to have a Plex Pass to use Downloads?

The exact date has not yet been chosen. The date will be provided once a decision has been made. It will be a date in the future.

I have not seen any announcement from Plex regarding that cutoff date.

Not planned and I won’t. The only ones that have such users are for the AppleTV at my house and on my family’s phones (the ones that already have profiles because I created one for their AppleTV) I share everything else through their Plex account (and if they don’t have one then they create one) and my family members who I connected to the main account don’t have either the password of the account and also this account is protected by 2FA.

It’s just annoying that you can’t create full accounts through PMS (like you can in emby)

Not sure what you mean.
Go to plex.tv and Sign Up for a new user account.

Yes, of course, note that I said like emby where I can create users within the server itself without using an external service (plex.tv)

Genuinely curious: Why would you expect anyone on this forum to know what “like Emby” means in this context? If you have a specific feature which you would like to be supported, it would be best to describe it in detail.

Because there are many people who switch from emby to Plex and in general many know both emby and Plex. And also the option to create users directly on the emby server is one of the most prominent things that differentiate the two.

There’s a feature suggestion for each Plex Media Server to run their own authentication without relying on Plex’ backend. That being said I deem it rather unlikely to happen as Plex have expanded their services and built certain value-adds on having that centralized backend (incl. a centralized authentication).
