So I cannot get surround sound working at all. It was working a few months ago, but all I’ve done is update my software in the interim, and now it’s not working anymore.
What’s happening is that when I try to play a movie with AAC 5.1, the receiver says that it’s actually getting 2.0 PCM 48khz, and the center/surround channels are cut out so I get no dialogue at all. It’s like Plex is simply streaming the FR/FL channels and calling it 2.0.
I’ve tried every permutation of options possible. In the Shield, I’ve tried setting the surround sound to Auto, Manual, and None. None used to properly downmix the 5.1 into 2.0, but it no longer does. In Auto mode, it mentions that the tuner doesn’t support AAC. When I turn on manual mode and enable AAC, I get no audio whatsoever, which I suppose isn’t surprising.
In Plex, I’ve played around with the passthrough option. When it’s off, AC3 5.1 and AAC 5.1 streams cut out the center/surround channels. When it’s on, AC3 5.1 works fine, but AAC does not.
I’ve also played around with the h.264 option, from 2.0 to 5.2, and none of the options makes any difference. I always get the same behavior.
What the heck am I doing wrong here? I’m completely stumped.
