Nvidia Shield - Surround Sound not working

Server Version#: Version 1.16.6.1592
Player Version#: 7.21.0.12323 (a3621a18)
Device: Nvidia Shield 2017 (latest software update)
Receiver: Sony STR-DH590

So I cannot get surround sound working at all. It was working a few months ago, but all I’ve done is update my software in the interim, and now it’s not working anymore.

What’s happening is that when I try to play a movie with AAC 5.1, the receiver says that it’s actually getting 2.0 PCM 48khz, and the center/surround channels are cut out so I get no dialogue at all. It’s like Plex is simply streaming the FR/FL channels and calling it 2.0.

I’ve tried every permutation of options possible. In the Shield, I’ve tried setting the surround sound to Auto, Manual, and None. None used to properly downmix the 5.1 into 2.0, but it no longer does. In Auto mode, it mentions that the tuner doesn’t support AAC. When I turn on manual mode and enable AAC, I get no audio whatsoever, which I suppose isn’t surprising.

In Plex, I’ve played around with the passthrough option. When it’s off, AC3 5.1 and AAC 5.1 streams cut out the center/surround channels. When it’s on, AC3 5.1 works fine, but AAC does not.

I’ve also played around with the h.264 option, from 2.0 to 5.2, and none of the options makes any difference. I always get the same behavior.

What the heck am I doing wrong here? I’m completely stumped.

How are your devices setup?

Shield -> AVR -> TV

or

Shield -> TV -> AVR

Shield -> AVR -(ARC)> TV

If it’s AVR -> TV, you don’t need ARC, so maybe try another hdmi port.

I’ll need to see your Shield logs to see what the app is told your AVR can handle.

Ok, how do I get at those? I’ll try swapping from the ARC slot too.

Okay I tried to parse out the relevant bits from my experimentations this morning. Here’s the log.

09-18 11:13:13.856 i: [UserAction] Preference ‘Passthrough’ changed to 0

You turned off passthrough. This causes the app to send the 5.1 AAC directly to the Shield, then the Shield will decide what to do. The Shield does not support passthrough of 5.1 AAC so it downmixes it to stereo.

You should enable passthrough in the Plex app, then in the Shield’s passthrough settings, set it to dolby digital plus. PMS will then transcode the AAC to EAC3 and you will get 5.1.

This solved my similar issue, had to manually select compatible modes for my Denon. TY
