I’ve updated to Roku 10 and am using the Plex preview app.
I went to check playback info of a stream today and got the message “AAC in mkv container cannot direct play on Roku OS 10” and it was direct streaming instead.
Why on earth can’t it direct play AAC anymore? AAC is supposed to be the most widely compatible audio codec.
I’m getting really sick of each Roku update introducing a brand new issue for me to solve.
The Preview App for Roku contains a fix (work-around) for this issue:
I run the Preview App exclusively. A Roku Private Channel isn’t listed in the guide, but can be updated in moments. It doesn’t need to endure the Roku App Approval Sequence and contains all the goodies to be the best there is at any given time.
I uninstalled the Official App some time ago.
It’s in the Guide if I ever need it.
Can’t imagine why I would.
You can Track that thread and when you see an update happened, update your system and get it - or your box will when it checks for an update every day. Easy.
Yep, well the ‘work-around’ to a Roku INC issue is, apparently, a remux.
Easy operation using almost no resources.
If you notice - the same thing happens if you have ASS subs engaged with ‘Image Formats Only’ activated. The streams have to go in a new container, but a Direct Stream (Remux) is way better than a transcode.
I trust the Plex Roku team will do the best they can for us - and the Preview App is where it’ll happen first.
Curious – how many channels in the AAC audio that no longer works? There is a long-standing, known problem with the newer Roku Ultra being unable to support anything more than 2 channel AAC (though that may be only with MP4 containers).
