ability to direct play MKV with mpeg2 video?

Does anyone know if the Plex app for the Xbox One will soon get the ability to direct-play mpeg2 video? I have my Plex server on a WD My Cloud Mirror device and am using the Plex DVR feature using a HDHomerun Connect, but it records the video in mpeg2 and the Plex app won’t play it without transcoding, which of course the NAS can’t do. Thanks!

The MDE on the app is currently set to play all available video formats that the app has access to. I am going to run some tests a bit later to double check the capability and if I find something different I will file an issue with the developers. In either case I will post again with the results of the testing.

I performed my test with two different sample files:
1080i - mkv/mpeg2video/ac3
1080p - mkv/mpeg2video/aac

The first file played back but had a slideshow effect for the first 3 seconds. The second file I created with ffmpeg from a different file I had and played back with no issues. I reported the issue onto the developers to hopefully look at adding the additional support. The only issue might be if that first video is an indication of a problem with the mpeg2 decoder rather then a problem with the file itself.

Interesting, thanks for testing that! I was basing the question on this document:

https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/203824396-What-media-formats-are-supported-

…as there is no mention of mpeg2 anywhere. I get the “server not powerful enough to convert video” error when I try to play the DVR recordings through the Xbox One Plex app. Thanks again!
