I have used Plex for many years and always gotten by just fine with software transcoding. I decided to upgrade and I have ordered Tesla P4’s for hardware accelerated transcoding. However, I only want to use encoding, not decoding. The P4 has 1x NVDEC chip and 2x NVENC chips. In addition, it “only” has 8GB VRAM. If I use hardware acceleration for decoding and encoding, the decoding will become the bottleneck and the VRAM will fill up quickly. However, If I use software decoding with hardware accelerated encoding (similar to Handbrake, which does not use any hardware acceleration for decoding), I will be able to sustain many more streams.
My interpretation of the current settings are that you can:
- Disable Transcoding
- Software Only Transcoding (Disable all Hardware Acceleration)
- Hardware Accelerated Decode / Software Encode
- Hardware Accelerated Decode and Encode
It does not appear the settings allow what I want, which is Software Decode / Hardware Accelerated Encode. Am I correct in this? Any way to change this? Thank you!
