Clicking play on an artist or album from the library view assumes I want to navigate into the play dialogue. But frequently, I want to start playing and continue scanning through the library for what I want to listen to next. This could be something like a shift/command click, for instant play.
Simply swipe the player interface downwards (on touch screen, use the ∨ with your mouse) to reveal the place where you were in the library before.
I’d still rather not change perspectives, it feels cumbersome to have to keep jump forward and back, knowing I don’t want to go forward at all.
It is neither. Think of the player as an overlay that you can minimize to the bottom.

Have you already tried disabling
Settings > Experience > Player > Show Full Player
