Ability to save metadata from "Edit Details" to the actual Mp4

I been having this long time issue of not be able to have an “Other Videos” library for family videos and use metadata to help locating them in plex.

Yes, I went through all of the support pages, all other suggestions on google, reddit and stackoverflow. It seems so many people have an issue with saving metadata and having plex pick them up in the Edit Details screen. I have also found, some of the tags in the edit details screen map to other odd metadata on the file. I never was able to find a mapping of this. I have tried to use idk, 20 different 3rd party tools which don’t work. I even used ffmpeg with python and plex still didn’t see it.

Can we pretty please with a cherry on top have this feature that will save the changes we make to the Edit Details screen give us an option to save the metadata directly to the mp4? It’s pointless to save this time consuming work in a database file only. Yes, there are agents for normal videos but not for videos of my sons birthday, our wedding, daughters first birthday and etc.

There’s already an existing suggestion discussing an option to write metadata changes to the original files (for supported file types). I suggest you comment/vote in that thread in order to help us avoid distracting or cannibalizing votes. Unless I’m missing some unique aspect of your suggestion I’ll close this thread as a duplicate.

[Feature Request] Metadata Write Back

I would like to see an optional item in libraries to write metadata changes back to the original media files. For my use case in particular my primary interest would be in ID3 tags for MP3 files and iTunes style tags for MP4 files. I have spent quite a bit of time properly tagging my media files and those tags are what allowed Plex to quickly make sense of my collection.
