Remote Access Suddenly Not Working

A few days ago I noticed that Remote Access was not working for the first time since I’ve had Plex. I checked to make sure it was enabled and that my internet was working correctly. I disabled Remote Access and then enabled it again. It connects for a few seconds and then disconnects again. I searched through the forums and some other places as well and tried many different fixes but nothing has worked. No changes were made to my system or to my modem, it simply stopped working at some point. After 3 days of dealing with it on my own, I’m hoping someone here will be able to help. I’m also hoping that the changes I’ve made haven’t screwed it up completely.

I’m on 1.18.4.2171, which I know many people have been having problems with, and I know that I’ll need to post logs and more information if anyone responds to this. Any help would be appreciated!

Here are the logs:Plex Media Server Logs_2020-01-24_14-41-07.zip (2.3 MB)

I am having the same problem, I think it was the update

This is happening to me to! How do we downgrade PLeX?

Running same PMS version on Windows and no issues with remote access.

I know it’s not everyone but a lot of people are affected by this right now. There are posts going back 5 or 6 months about this.

Because Plex has been giving me so many problems and none of the solutions I’ve looked into have worked, I downloaded Emby to give it a shot. Lo and behold, remote access is working perfectly with Emby, all of my media is visible outside of my house and the connection was set up instantly. So this is definitely a problem with Plex and not my internet. The last update screwed something up for a lot of people.

Might as well post my account with this while the topic is still fresh…
My Plex Server was running Windows 1803 and I decided to stupidly update to 1909
Problems arose immediately with Remote Access. Shows up green then red.
I have been constantly searching forums and reddit posts about this issue but to no avail.

My Setup:

  1. I am running the most recent update for Plex
  2. My router is an Arris TG3482G
  3. UPnP is enabled
  4. I have a DHCP Reservation for the server
  5. Port forwarding is enabled for 32400
  6. My Network is definitely set to private (I know windows will occasionally reset to public during updates)

Here’s my attempt at troubleshooting:

  1. Restart Computer
  2. Reset Plex (essentially pressing exit in the taskbar)
  3. Tried Disabling Remote access and Re-enabling in Plex
  4. Tried Disabling Port Forwarding and Re-enabling on Router
  5. Reset Windows Defender Firewall to Default values
  6. Tried repairing Plex installation which adds the apps and features back to the firewall exceptions after resetting.
  7. Tried canyouseeme.org to test whether my port was working (It definitely is!)
  8. Uninstalled Plex and reinstalled, backing up any registry settings or metadata.
  9. Even tried some powershell scripts that I didn’t fully understand which added some more exceptions to the firewall…
  10. Turned off/on firewall to test remote access again
  11. Created new rules in the firewall for port 32400
  12. Sulked at how much time I put into this issue
  13. Thought about installing emby…
  14. Tried setting up 2 separate port forwards (One for TCP and one for UDP)
  15. Tried setting up DMZ cause IDK anymore
  16. Came here to tell my story.

Nothing worked…
Moral of the Story: Don’t update if everything already works… Just don’t

I’ve done all of this also and nothing worked. Sorry that you’re frustrated also but at least I know I’m not alone in this

Here is what I’m seeing:

And this is the error I’m getting:

It’s saying that it can’t connect to my public ip address. I called my internet provider and they said that it’s working and accessible. This leads me to believe that it’s not my internet but rather something with Plex itself.

Could be a DNS Rebinding issue…

Check https://support.plex.tv/articles/206225077-how-to-use-secure-server-connections/#toc-4

I had a tech from my internet provider come out to the house today to check everything out. He said my internet is set up correctly for everything I want to do and the only thing that can’t access it from outside of the house is Plex. The public IP is accessible by everything we tried except Plex. Unfortunately, without knowing exactly how Plex works, he said he’s mystified as to why it’s not working. We rolled back to previous versions, performed numerous tests with other apps, and made a million changes to my internet along the way and nothing worked. It connects for a few seconds and then disconnects for no discernible reason having to do with my internet. Seeing all of the other people having the exact same issue, I’ve come to believe that something internal to Plex is broken for many of us with no solution. I’m at a total loss.

Well, with the amount of users using it on a daily basis, I kinda doubt that

Please provide more info here about your router, and how you configured port forwarding

It’s an Xfinity Gigabit modem. Below is the port forwarding setup. The correct private IP address is in the ip4 box.

Is the 32400 port also manually configured in PMS?

Since managed to connect for about 5 sec. towards http://<YOUR_PUBLIC_IP>:32400/identity and 5 sec later, I could not!

I entered it in the “manually specify public port” box as shown in the pic I uploaded. Do I need to enter it somewhere else also?

Nope, but above then IMHO indicates a bad router

The router is working exactly as it should, the tech checked it today. There is no problem with my internet at all except for where Plex is concerned. Every single thing works with my internet except for Plex.

Not sure I understood your previous post about connecting to my public IP.

And since you all the time can access it locally, I only see one thing between your PMS and the Internet, and that’s your router, sorry…
