You can try and disable hw decoding in the plex prefrence file for ac3 and/or dts.
Software decoding for ac3 and dts is supported. Downmixing to stereo is not supported but maybe your box can handle it (I had to edit a system file to have it)

needs to be modified

Unfortunately this requires root. My device is not rooted.

I had the same issue. I have a beelink gt1 android box. It was originally running android (not android tv). I couldn’t play AC3 file. To get it to work I had to go to settings, advanced, player, optional audio support and disable AC3.
I recently updated the firmware to use android TV on this box. I installed the plex for android tv app and got the connection lost error when playing AC3 files. Figuring I needed to disable AC3 I went to options, advances, there was no option for optional audio support.
Seeing one of the images above I noticed there was an option next to audio pass through called Optical Encodings. I did not have this option. Or so I thought. I changed my audio pass through to optical and the Optical Encodings setting became visible. I disabled AC3 then changed my pass though back to HDMI and voila I had audio.
It seems that this setting is not for optical encodings specifically and should likely be visible all the time. The name changed from “Optional Audio Support” to “Optical Encodings” between the android app and android tv app.

What’s BDigital saying it’s working. I think it’s about transcoding, and the only option to activate transcoding for audio it’s to activate optical passtrough and dezactivate AC3/DD direct stream.
Hoping devs gonna put a general option in the future updates.
