AC3 Passthrough audio skips

That’s no longer happening as it happens.

Well, I did see this announcement and am happy that Plex is committed to maintaining HTPC functionality. But saying that they will “keep PMP in TV mode working” is not the same as saying it will continue to be actively developed. It just means they’ll make sure it doesn’t break and stop working. Maybe I’m wrong, and even if I’m not wrong I’m still happy to see their announcement.

But either way, I’d sure enjoy having audio passthrough working sooner rather than later.

My issue was down to thermal throttling causing the audio skip. I knew awhile back that PMP was going to die so i went the next best route. I bought a Roku 4k ultra and turn on direct stream and forced direct play. I haven’t had an issue since and all my 4k content streams flawless audio and video. You can achieve the same result with an Nvidia shield or Apple TV.

Long are the days of watching direct from the server. It was nice while it lasted.

Glad you have a solution that works for you! Someday I guess I’ll have to look into a streaming box, but not yet, I’m still too invested in my HTPC setup for other reasons so it’s not going away.

I’m on the verge of trying Kodi with PlexKodiConnect, but I really would prefer to keep using PMP, other than this annoying audio passthrough bug it does exactly what I want and need (I like the new interface and it makes it easy to connect to other servers etc).

My problem is definitely not thermal throttling. Watching videos, my CPU is barely running, my temps are just above ambient. I can watch all day long in VLC with never a skip. But in PMP it’ll skip every couple of minutes, sometimes every couple of seconds. If this could get fixed I could use PMP happily as-is for a long time…

Just looking to keep this thread alive and hopefully hear back from someone at Plex. Is this being looked into, any progress, any hope that it will be fixed?

A few more things I’ve been trying. First, I do stay updated to the latest PMP and PMS versions, still no improvement. The issue happens if I’m playing from TV mode, or from the normal interface. I can also confirm that there is no issue when playing with audio passthrough using VLC and no issue using Kodi. So the problem is unique to PMP, and does not seem related to my computer setup or receiver.

Anyone at Plex have any comments?

Thanks,
Mike

Just checking in again to see if anyone at Plex has anything to say about this issue.

Note that with just a little bit of looking you’ll find many threads on this topic, such as this one:

I have tried the preview version of PMP 3.0 with the updated MPV player and see no change. Still get random audio drop-outs. It does seem that this problem only affects some users, passthrough must be working for some people. This would cause me to initially question something about my hardware or drivers, but I can confirm without question that playing the exact same movie file in VLC or in Kodi works with no issue using passthrough, so this brings us back to a software issue in Plex.

Any progress or comments?

I also experienced this on a movie with AC3 5.1 sound. It’s a shame it’s still not solved.

@sensei321, i gave up and purchased the newer NVidia Shield TV Pro and use that plex app. I can confirm that it direct plays nearly every movie that i’ve thrown at it. So long as your not needing subtitles.

Sadly I do need subtitles as well.

I finally gave up and switched to Emby. Not a single problem since.
