So my TrueNAS (FreeNAS) server is getting old and I have a lot of files in the system. (6 years old)
My UnRaid is brand new and is currently running on swanky hardware and 2x4tib HDD. I do plan to populate them and eventually migrate to UnRaid (if I like it). So far I am liking the functionalities though.
I have run into a slight road block. Most of my media files are on the FreeNAS box. I have installed plex on the UnRaid server and mounted the FreeNAS share to it.
Would anyone be able to guide me (I guess it’s beyond the scope of this forum) on how to get plex on Unraid to read directories from FreeNAS?
My guest woulf be to create a mountpoint to your freenas (ex: /mnt/freenas), probably done manually in CLI.
After, simply present this mountpoint to you docker as library.
Maybe an apps exist to do this in GUI but my quick one woulb be to do his from the good old way.
Very basic/quick solution
So I ran into Squid (the one who wrote CA for unraid) at the Unraid forums and its actually turned out to be quite simple.
You need the community plugin unassigned devices and add plex and “Mount” and one should prefer auto mount with every start up. Next up quite similar to what you wrote, ie find the mint/freenas/media and add it as a media folder. After that plex pretty much becomes a matter of setting up the app.
I only answer my own question to help someone else getting such in the future with a similar problem.
Thanks @janydesbiens
Sorry for the late reply, and trust me, I felt worse on the unraid forum when I asked very basic and stupid questions. TBH the last thing I studied in programming was C++ and that too was aeons ago.
So I did run into a flash drive error in a few days after squid gave me the solution and I’m happy to report that I could retrace all my steps albeit some commands and parameters I didn’t remember, With Unraid 6.9 rc2 the nvidia transcoding has become even easier than before. Please keep reading.
First you gotta install community apps on your unraid. Basically that involves pasting a link in install plugins.
Once you have that look for unassigned devices in the apps tab which appears after you’ve installed the community apps.
Now go to unassigned devices and mount using the method you prefer. Since my Free/TrueNAS box has smb enabled for my daily windows laptop I used the same. From there you gotta create a mount to the share of Free/TrueNAS.
Optional for only those using nvidia gfx card for transcoding, you will need nvidia drivers. You might have to update your OS to 6.9.rc2 and install the nvidia drivers which is currently at 6.2.
After restart you should download the plex (Linux repository) for easiest integration to the nvidia transcoding and plex.
For plex and nvidia you can watch space invader ones latest video. Also I think there is the nvidia problem solved as well in that video.
Please mark as a solution if this post helped you. I’m sure with the gfx card shortage even a 1650 is a good alternative than non existent Quadro and Titans
