Accounts able to access Plex hosted content when disabled

Someone posted this on Reddit and I was able to recreate.

I have Online Media Sources disabled on my server, all options. When I go to my library on my iPhone or iPad, and go into a show, and click the three dots, and select “More ways to watch”, and then select “More On This Title” with the Plex icon, it takes me to the show page for what I was on, and if you scroll down on this page, you are presented with “Titles You Might Like On Plex”. From here, if you select one of the titles, you can then begin to watch it. This content is not on my server, so it’s coming from Plex.

This happens with the primary account and all Managed accounts.

Commenting for more visibility. This is very concerning for us with managed profiles for kids that can access content that is not parent approved.

Doesn’t discover credits kinda have the same workflow? Select any cast credits from within your local media, which takes you to their discover credits page. In there you have Known For, Filmography and depending on the cast member you could also have Featured Videos which is all the plex content.

I brought it up when this rolled out in 2022 and its gone ignored. I even created this feature request for it Remove "Known For and Filmography" from Cast Discover Credits.

Interesting, I’ve never clicked through those pages. You’re right, can stream movies from Plex’s hosted content through that method as well.

Hmm yeah that hub should not exist if our VOD catalog source is disabled. Not sure how that got by. Regardless, thanks for reporting. We’ll get this fixed.

Edit:
Actually it’s bit more complicated. I’m asking around for clarity.

Thanks, @Atomatth , much appreciated!

Maybe linked to the same issue, if I view a cast member, say Cillian Murphy, and view his “Known For” movies, I can start a movie I don’t have in my library. This happens via Mobile app. If I do it via Web, I get prompted that if I watch it, I’ll re-enable the sources.

Complicated tech-wise, or business-wise? :stuck_out_tongue:

You’ve found one of the complicated bits. You should see the prompt to enable the source but that should only be for the Main/admin account. A managed users shouldn’t see the prompt nor be able to play from a disabled source.

The topic has been raised internally. So we should get this figured out.

:backhand_index_pointing_up: Tech wise. We have a lot of settings and toggles to try and accommodate most users. My initial assessment might not be 100% accurate.

I see. Just tried and my managed users can’t see “Known For”, so they wouldn’t be able to start a stream. Good to know!!

So just looks like the admin account gets the listing and can start watching on mobile vs getting the “enable” popup prior to starting.

Ok so my initial assumption was correct . You would still be able to enable our VOD catalog from the paths described in the post above but that would only be as the Admin, not managed users.

Sounds good. So it just looks like on mobile, the prompt doesn’t come up for the admin asking to enable it, it just starts vs on web it does come up. It doesn’t change the setting in Online Media Sources in the mobile use case either.

The other issue regarding the items showing up for managed users is still open, correct?

Correct. There are two issues:

  • Plex hosted content hubs existing when the source is disabled.
  • Not prompting to enable the Plex source when attempting to play that Plex hosted content.

This should be fixed now. This was a backend change so no need for a release.

This :backhand_index_pointing_up: is still an issue but looks like it’ll follow the same pattern of being a backend fix. :crossed_fingers:
