Action by PLEX Live TV and DVR when tuners available < Tuners needed for recording

Plex Media Server: Version 1.14.1.5488
Plex Web Client: Version 3.77.4
Windows 7x64, i7, 24 GB Ram

Source for Live TV: Two Silicondust HD Homerun Primes (3 tuners per Prime for total of 6 available tuners.)

Issue 1: With five recordings manually selected from the Guide, when I select a Sixth recording, I am not presented with any dialog box to say that I’m now using all available tuners.

Issue 2: With Six recordings underway, I click on another recording to manual record from the Guide, Plex does not present any type of dialog box to let me know that it took it upon itself to find another airing of this TV show and record it later. (GREAT feature, but LET ME KNOW that the recording has been scheduled for another time due to no available tuners at the prescribed time)

Issue 3: When I went to the guide to see why Plex accept my request to record a 7th show at the same time, the guide shows this 7th show as recording both at the time I attempted to kick off 7 recordings with 6 tuners available, and when this tv show is airing again two hours later. Shouldn’t the guide NOT be showing that it’s recording at that first slot, since PLEX took it upon itself to record it two hours later?

Going in to look at my two tuners for an unrelated reason, I see Plex is not good at math:

My first HDHomeRun PRIME is magically recording 4 shows with 3 tuners.
and
My second HDHomeRun Prime is magically recording 6 shows with 3 tuners.

I have HDHomeRun Extend recievers and I am seeing the same thing. My Plex shows recording activity that should have ended hours ago. It looks like PLEX is recording 2 copies of the same show and get confused on how to end them both.

mlwest1976,

Apparently this issue is a non issue for the folks at Plex… Two weeks, and I thought we’d at least get an acknowledgement of this issue from the folks at Plex.

Still waiting for basic LiveTV/DVR bugs to be fixed for aborted playback and failed acquisition of tuners and about a dozen other things. Don’t hold your breath. They’ve released a couple ROKU Preview channel updates for the ROKU but they’ve been of minimal help. Server 5488 is also still crashing.

Many are experimenting with other solutions. It’s been more than a month since LiveTV/DVR has worked for me and longer than that for it to be sketchy…

What tuners do you have? (not that I can be of any help), Just wondering if you have a setup similar to mine, or not.)

I’m so very much wanting to pull the plug on WMC and move to another solution.

I have the following setup

Silicondust Homerun Connects (3 tuners per for 6 tuners total)
HP Pavilion Elite desktop (i7 930 @ 2.80Ghz), 24 GB Ram
Windows 7 x64 Pro for Windows Media Center on the HP Pavilion Elite
Two xBox 360’s as Extenders at two TVs
1 GB Ethernet throughout the house.

This setup has been working just fine for 10+ years.

I’ve attempted to move to other systems to replace the aging WMC… I keep going back to WMC (well… my wife says go back too)

My first venture into Plex for Live TV/DVR was a no go for the month I gave it a go… way to many disappointments and failures compared to the tired WMC system.

I heard Plex went with a Grid TV Guide, and which was a major reason for not going all in with Plex for Live TV/ DVR services.

I went ahead and went with a Lifetime Plex Pass, hoping for the best.

I still see lots of positive potential with Plex for how I want to use it. (I’ve a dream of it providing an ‘experience’ equal to or better than WMC.)

What other solutions have you tried? I looked at Emby… it’s got potential… I like that Emby appears to be concentrating on more core features that I’m interested in, as opposed to Plex, that appears to be headed in many directions…, which leads me to believe they are spreading themselves too thin… to the point where I wonder if the Live TV and DVR features will be neglected when it comes to features and bug fixes.

I wish someone from Plex would take the time to setup Windows Media Center… use it’s DVR features for a month or so, and see if some the better features of WMC can be implemented into Plex’s Live TV and DVR

I bought a Nvidia Shield with the thougth of using it as a Plex Media SERVER… that was a dismal failure… Perhaps because it was pointing to a share on my Windows Storage Server 2012 R2… and not local storage on the Nvidia Shield… who knows… I haven’t had a chance to further test… I opted to stay with Plex on the PC that’s running my WMC… and use Nvidia Shield as a Plex Client… that works well, for the most part.

I’ve got 2 Hauppauge quads in a fourth generation i7 machine. PLENTY of horsepower…

I really don’t think they get LiveTV/DVR and don’t necessarily care. They used it as bait IMO to get subscription money.
