On the site I’ve seen it written on forums and Plex’s own product pages that devices with two tuners, like the HD Homerun series tuners, can be used to either watch two shows, record two shows, or watch and record one show each, at the same time. Has anyone actually tested and tried this. I’ve been trying to get this to work for myself, but when I make recordings that double book the same time slot the recording schedule interface throws an error at me asking me to modify the schedule, and then only one show gets recorded. Even right now. I can see two shows are scheduled and only one tuner is being used (see picture below of HD Homerune Connect Web Interface.) I’ve tested watching two shows at once on a phone and desktop earlier, and that worked fine, but then I nearly flipped a ■■■■ while trying to record a show while I was watching TV. Plex didn’t start the recording on time. I paused to the show I was on to see why. Couldn’t find a good reason. I killed my current channel, and THEN I got a notification that recording had started. I thought, well what the hell, what happens when I try to watch TV. Now while Plex is still recording I get this damn error about playback one EVERY channel (see second photo below.)
Does someone know what I did wrong, or have any workaround to make this DVR / Live TV function not totally suck?
I use that function, I can record 2 shows at once or watch something Live while something else is recording.
in plex under your DVR does it see 2 tuners?
I can see both of my tuners. It just doesn’t seem to use them. In my original post, you can see it seems to only use tuner 0, as shown by the web interface of my HD Homerun Connect. A playback error is given when I try to watch TV while it is recording
Show is recording according to Plex. Also, I still see conflicts with the recording schedule. Is this just a generic warning? I still only record one show at once, but is this normal for everyone else?
First off you show you have 2 tuners with 10 recording now which is not good.
Can you get plex restarted so it shows 2 tuners and 0 recording?
All those shows with a red circle and hung recordings in your system.
It will tune into 2 channels in your case or 3 tuners if using a prime (example). This can be a combination of recording or Live TV.
If you have 1 recording and watch the same channel Plex will only use 1 tuners since it’s the same channel.
Downside of Plex DVR compare to many other DVRs is that you can’t start playing a recording until it’s completely finished. This is a bummer for sports like NFL where you might want to jump in and start watching after it has been recording for 30 to 45 minutes. You can’t start at the beginning until it’s finished recording.

Lets get that cleared out and we can try again.
I’ll give that a shot thank you. I was actually pissed a second ago. I saw none of the shows for today that were scheduled actually recorded, but Plex said they recorded 100% complete. The wife is watching her shows right now, so I can’t reboot it just yet, but I’ll reboot it tonight and see if I can get it to act more normal.
Starting to wonder if my DVR is defective. Claiming it’s busy for seemingly no reason. There are no other clients on the network using the DVR. I’m sure of that.
I restarted the HD Homerun tuner. Still says it’s “busy” when I scan channels in Plex. I said screw it and clicked continue anyway. Going to see what happens when I schedule shows to record.
Well, it’s at least reporting normally now. It seems to see both tuners, and only shows recording conflicts when there are more than two shows scheduled:
Is there a version of you guys are running that just, ya know, doesn’t suck? I’m on the latest:
Are any of you with this working on an earlier version by chance?
Also can anyone confirm or deny that while I am recording there should be an activity notification for each job?
I’m also now convinced Plex isn’t recording anything. Looking at the system resources I can see there is not CPU or disk activity.
I checked it’s trying to save to the right library and it has write access to that location. That was proven with another show. There aren’t even any recording conflicts:
I’ve never added the HD Homerun app to any other device on my network, so it can’t be that something else is using it at the same time either.
I’ve noticed the only shows that recorded successfully finish with a play button next to them. Does anyone know of why Plex would use the recording symbol for the failed ones?
Well this is even more damn annoying! I went to go modify the recording settings of a show that is supposed to be recording, and the damn thing doesn’t have any of the original settings I put in there, despite the recording schedule saying it’s being recorded:
