Activated Plex not working on my children's Amazon Fire HD tablet

Server Version#: 1.24.3.5033
Player Version#: 8.23.2.28087

I was trying to activate Plex on my children’s Amazon Fire HD Tablet. It would keep giving me an error saying in-app purchases were disabled for my kids’ account. I then went to the parental side and activated it there which works fine.

Unfortunately, as soon as I go back to the children’s side, it, again, says that the app is not activated…

I then hit these Plex forums and started looking around only to be horrified to find this:

and this one which has a dead link to a possible resolution with Amazon which I can’t see:

There is no way that I can justify purchasing the Plex Pass for the type of usage I am doing and just purchase one-time fees when needed which are equivalent to only one month of plex pass anyway but I digress.

So, is there ANY WAY to get my one-time app purchase to transfer over to my children’s FreeTime account? The ONLY reason I purchased it on the Amazon account was for that purpose…

If not, welp, I was just cheated out of some $$$. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

P.S.: I suggest you (the Plex team) have some sort of warning or anything really that will alert people who make the purchase on the Amazon appstore as those are the ones likely to suffer from this limitation.

For the record, I DID contact Amazon support hoping to have some kind of solution or way to transfer the purchase to the second account but they said it was not possible to do so nor was there any way to enable in-app purchases for a child account. He did note the feedback though and said it would be sent internally as a suggestion.

In the end, they offered a full refund for the in-app purchase which I did not take and will instead manually log into my parent account when I want my child to use Plex since there is no other solution available to me unfortunately.

So, problem solved I guess…?

Create a home user under your main Plex account and all apps will be unlocked for each user if you have a Plex pass.

You don’t have a plex pass so it will make you purchase each app on different devices.

What do you mean by “create a home user under your main account”? You mean in Plex or in Amazon?

Edit: Yep, and I am fine with that (having to purchase on each device) as I don’t even have a handful of them and only one of which is a mobile device and is in the same network.

You’ll need to get a Plex pass and create your childs Plex profile under home users and then the apps will be activated for everyone on all devices. For $4.99 USD it’s well worth it. Otherwise there’s not much you can do except trusting your child on your own Amazon profile.

OR get your child a Roku which doesn’t require the app to be purchased.

Bah, if the Plex pass was a one-time thing, sure. But at 4.99$ USD/month, its far from being worth it IMO. I could register 12 accounts on 12 devices in a year for that price, way more then I’ll ever need in the next 20 years.

I’ll just let my child use the app on my profile on his tablet. He never uses it without my supervision anyway.

Thanks anyway!

They can have their own Plex home account with restrictions set but still be under your Amazon account.

I usually log him into the Plex Guest account I left open for that purpose but I still hit the 1-minute playback limit with that.

Are you saying I would be able to get around that using another Plex user account on my server? Or are you simply talking about the Plex library/media restrictions?

The Plex restrictions aren’t an issue here. Its the 1-minute playback limit on my Amazon Kids+ account on the tablet that is and the fact that it can’t recognize the parent account Plex device unlock in-app purchase which is on the same device that is an issue.

Hello people.

I came today looking for the an answer to exactly the same problem.

Yes, this is not about multiple devices. Your fix is okay but I find I am constantly having to re-navigate to PLEX and fix accidentally changed settings as children are able and do also loosing app screen-focus easily on an adult or admin account on the Kindle.

The only real complete fix is to take the loss of the admin purchase then

Go to Settings
Users
Choose your child’s account settings
Chose [Enable Purchases]
Slide the slider to ON
Open the child’s account
Open PLEX and Click Activate
Then… Begrudgingly log in to your PLEX Account and PAY Again
Its only about 3 or four Pounds or Dollars.
Go back to the parental account and disable purchases for the childs account.
(unles you want to give them the ability to buy a 90ft Luxury Yacht  when you’re not looking )

I Run 5 PLEX servers and think this greedy little annoyance may be unique to Amazon. But it explains how old Jeffaroony Bezos can take his mates to Space for shiz and giggles as a hobby.!!

You are absolutely correct that Amazon and/or even PLEX when purchasing through Amazon should include a Caveat when purchasing through Amazon that the purchase is user specific and not transferable (as it is through Google etc…). Devices meant for children should be financially managed responsibly by Companies and Creators.

Well that’s my lot.
Hope our combined posts help others.
Ciao for now

PLEX Admin please listen and review.

Plex app activations are USER and DEVICE SPECIFIC on Amazon without a Plex pass. If you can buy the activation again using the child account on the childs device then that’s what you have to do otherwise let the child use the parent account with the app activated on the child device.

Unfortunately if the parent account has the app already activated on another device this will not transfer over aka device specific.

Good morning

Thank you for summarising the last post.

Good work !

@BUSH_BABY: I looked around everywhere in the settings and contacted Amazon and it seems like your solution does not apply to Amazon Fire HD tablets, not with Freetime/Amazon Kids+ anyway. I don’t have the options you mention and an Amazon rep told me there was no way for me to enable purchases for my child’s account.

Oh well, thanks anyway!

HIya Naashkyr,

I’m sorry Amazon are still giving you a hard time.

Tomorrow I will post screenshots. The only difference between your Kindle and my granddaughters is we chose one down from HD but still subscribe to t he kids+ etc.

Amazon reps aren’t very knowledgable. I hope with the screen shots it will match up with your HD version as its the same operating system.

It’s worth another try, right !? :orange_heart: :crossed_fingers:
