Plex Activation on Amazon Freetime

Bringing back an old topic to see if anyone has been able to resolve the issue of app activation not replicating to Amazon Freetime accounts?

From reading old threads it seems this has been an ongoing issue since 2013 or thereabouts. The issue is that you can activate the Plex app on a Kindle device and everything works as it should, but when you go into a child account within the Freetime user interface you are forced to purchase the Plex activation again for each child that you want to be able to access your Plex server.

We’ve had Kindle Fire tablets for the kids for several years now and about every 18 months I make sure everything is updated and try to activate the Plex app again without paying three separate times. I’ve never been in touch with an Amazon CSR who wants to try to investigate the issue, they are quick to tell you to contact Plex and refund your multiple activation fees.

To me this is more of an Amazon problem with the way their Freetime interface is built, but they are so quick to cancel the order because if they were to somehow refund you without actually cancelling the activation they’d still be on the hook to pay Plex their fee.

I would think after 8+ years, and with the popularity of the Kindle devices, there would be a way to enter an activation code within the app to force activation.

I enjoy the Plex service, and don’t have any problem contributing to the app development. I’ve paid for activation through the Google Play store, iTunes, and I think the Microsoft app store also had a $5 activation fee early on (maybe I’m incorrect on this), but I can’t see paying Amazon triple the fee for something that should be included in one activation.

Has anyone found a workaround to this?

This is a restriction of how Amazon devices work under Freetime. The Freetime user does not have access to the Appstore, therefore there is no way to check that the activation has been purchased.

Doesn’t seem like it would be that difficult for Amazon to implement when the Freetime user can currently make in-app purchases.

Don’t get me wrong, I know it’s an Amazon issue, but was hopeful that sooner or later Plex would help us to work around it with an activation key or similar approach.

Unfortunately Amazon doesn’t share purchase information with Plex so we can’t verify if a user has purchased the activation.
