It seems ad/commercial marking is much too aggressive, skipping over significant parts of non-ad content after the ads.
I have it configured to only mark the commercials, not auto-skip, so I get the “Skip Ads” button on screen. When I select that function it does skip. but skips about 60-90 seconds of non-ad content after the ads.
This in itself wouldn’t be a big problem, except that after it skips forward, attempting to back up doesn’t work. It backs up but then immediately skips forward again to where it originally skipped to.
For me this is happening when playing back on a Samsung Smart TV with the Plex app.
Not that i know about. I don’t do recording much, but when i do, it seems to get most commercials pretty well, and the only content it sees wrong is the cold open of Stephen Colbert, which mocks news segments often so is often confused for them.
As for being unable to skip back, that shouldn’t happen either. Is it the “Auto-skip ads” function of your TV triggering after you rewind, or does it happen instantly?
The TV doesn’t have an “Auto skip ads” function. I’ve been through the entire settings UI for the TV without seeing anything like that.
When I try to skip backwards the progress bar and video do skip back but then within 1/4-1/2 second or so it skips forward. Skipping back multiple times exhibits the same behavior… I can skip back 30, 40, 50 seconds (press “back” 3, 4 or 5 time) but it then immediately resets to where it was after the initial skip.
If I press “back” quickly, enough times to get back BEFORE the initial ad skip, it doesn’t skip forwards. I.e. if I skip back to any point within the segment it detected as ads, it auto-skips forwards. Backing up beyond that, to before the initial ad skip point , itworks OK.
Also, if I know an ad is coming up and manually skip forwards before the “Skip Ads” button appears, then auto-skip doesn’t happen at all and I’m in control.
For my situation, where I know where the ad blocks are and how long they are, I’ve disabled ad marking and will do it manually (as I’ve been doing with my Dish Hopper for years).
So far Plex is looking like it will allow me to dump DIsh altogether It does what I need except for some minor inconveniences.
