Ad volume normalization please

It would be really nice to not have to hold the remote control the entire time I’m watching a free movie or TV show in order to lower the volume for ads.

It’s not even close to normal levels. It’s like the loudness for the advertisement is two to three times higher than the movie or TV show. This is really unacceptable in 2020, with digital audio being so easy to normalize programmatically.

This one issue is really the only thing keeping me as a plutoTV user for my on demand and live tv needs.

There are already clearly defined LUFS values for the ads. Unfortunately, not every spot is adhering to them, yet.
It will still require some learning process

Please report those ads which are excessively loud, so something can be done about it.
Please add the topic/brand/company of the ad, as well as the channel/movie, and the clock time and your geographical region.

Can’t run a scan on submitted ads for compliance?

If it were that simple… but unfortunately it is not.

So it’s been 2 years and the ad volume is still 2-3x higher than the content being watched on any of the Plex provided TV & Movies.

Every ad that comes through is too loud. Kay Jewlers, Gain, GMC, don’t know the rest because I just mute them all. What good is their advertising if you mute it the minute you see a commercial is coming and keep it muted until the movie or show starts again?

I saw someone from Plex say it is the volume the advertisers send it through at on another thread, but if every one is loud are you not able to suggest their level? Cable TV and OTA channels I don’t have that issue but I don’t know if that is their software or if it is a mandate by them to advertisers. I’m just hoping there is a solution other than reporting every ad.

Please report at least the channel name you were watching.

@OttoKerner apologies for not stating originally. It was video on demand in my instance. The movie last night was Tomorrow: When the War Began. Let me know if there is anything else I should pay attention to that you would need clarified.

Oh, and it is through the Plex app installed either on my Samsung or LG smart TV. They both have the same issue.

Currently watching Phenomena in the Free to Watch category and wow most of these ads are significantly louder than the movie. Really wish someone would pass a law that ads had to be no more than 80% of the volume of the main programming on all services. It would solve a lot of this crap

The ads for the truck safety are incredibly loud while watching Spartacus. There has to be a way to make people submit volume normalized ads. There was another ad too that i saw earlier and should have noted.

The High Winds Casino ads are also insanely loud while watching Spartacus. In addition to the semi truck safety ads.

Volume normalization for ads, and interstices

So I’ve been watching a show for several weeks now, and the ads are just really, really loud. I don’t mind watching them, or them playing so much, but the volume is just really, really loud..! Especially your ads, and insterstitial content, in particular Joy of Painting/Bob Ross one, and your piano BGM in particular. The shows’ intros are also very loud, and I would recommend volume normalization as a metadata value for all content, including show intros, outros, film credits, etc. either as part of your stream meta, or as part of timecode/value pairs in a small cacheable file, or otherwise.

The show is still interesting, but the loudness of the ads makes the experience unpleasant to repeat to some extent, and also makes it very hard to leave the show playing in the background in my house, particularly at night, just because of the spikes in amplitude on the sound tracks.

You are service that, at its roots, allows media files to be piped through various software, and I think it would be a very good look for you to do it for your on demand, and even live content. I really love Plex in general, I’m even considering Plexamp after learning of is existence, and Plex Pass, and that’s precisely the reason I’m writing you, because I believe you would get more ad views, better conversion statistics, and more viewership on both your VOD, and IPTV offerings, and a technology you could surely transpose to your PVR service, allowing people to normalize their recorded streams, and interstitial content, and also apply to trailer media/trailer streams o make the server/player experience better, and more predictable, allowing users to create market-leading experiences, and promote the Plex name even further.

I sincerely hope this message finds you well, because while I appreciate the ads in the sitcom I’m re-watching on your service, and appreciate the content recommendations, I dislike having to reach for the remote so often, especially while I’m working.

Best regards,

This would be great, and needs more attention
