Commercial Sound Volume

Does anyone know how to make the volume of commercials the same as movies/tv shows. When Plex goes to a commercial it seems the volume is twice as loud as the show you are watching, this can get very annoying. It’s almost to the point where I won’t watch movies anymore because I am constantly playing with the tv volume.

Thanks,

That is functionality that Plex does not have unless it snuck in when I was not looking.

Some devices implement some version/level of that ability and there are some hardware devices that implement it to one degree or andothe but, mostly, those are only good for simple stereo (including Dolby 2.1) application and most that work have, for some reason, probably the stereo only support, been removed from many markets or priced out of reach for most people.

Most modern receivers have such functionality to one degree or another. It is usually called something like"volume limiting or volume normalization or night mode or something like that. Roku actually has such functionality built in that mostly works OK.

BTW: There are FCC regulations in place that make blaring commercials illegal for OTA broadcasts but those regulations have never, to my knowledge, been extended to include streaming content.

On the rare occasions when I watch content with commercials I use some skip ahead function (like right arrow on the Roku) to avoid them or, when that is not allowed, I keep my thumb hovering over the mute button and mute the offending material.

I have a couple of these and they work quite well.
but they and all I know of are currently out of stock on Amazon.

I just avoid shows with ads, or mute is on speed dial

I am amazed when people don’t know - that’s how Ad Supported works.
That’s how it’s always worked. That’s how it’s working now. What’s the problem?

My Roku has a built-in Ad Blast Leveler - 'cause Roku is the undisputed master of Ad Supported - THEY KNOW how Ad Supported works.

I have no idea if The Blast Leveler works or not 'cause I already know how Ad Supported works and find this the best way to deal with it:

That may be how it is supposed to work but I doubt it unless it was designed by Trump. Ads should(are supposed to be) designed to catch your attention and hold it so you buy the product or service or idea that gets presented but ads that irritate you right from the start cause people to ignore the content and the content is what we are supposed to absorb.

Also quite a few years ago the FCC mandated broadcast TV to limit ads to the volume of the show the ad was appearing in. That never got extended to streaming shows mainly because it is virtually unenforceable due to the content coming from several different sources.

But all that is not really germain as @wilsonxp was really just asking how and not why.

The answer to how is that there are many ways but all of them are outside Plex while the why is just a matter of personal preference.

Thanks Elijah, I remember when it was common for ads on regular tv to be much louder than the show and it was annoying back then too. All it made you do was change the channel which as you said defeated the whole purpose of having the ads. I have no problems watching the ads or at least leaving them on because I know they help support Plex, but if they’re annoying they will be ignored.

If we are talking about the ads in plex’s online media sources, please state your geographical region and the topic of the ad. Usually there can be done something.

Until they all have learned that it is bad business to annoy your potential customers.

Yes, it’s the online movies that have the ads. I only remember a car/truck ad but can’t remember which mfg since it’s been a while since I’ve watched anything. They all seemed to have the same issue. I tried my best to ignore the ads by muting or tuning them out.

I’m in Canada if that helps.

Thanks, I have forwarded your report.
Pity, you didn’t remember more details, though.

I am watching the Dresdin files and the commercials are insanely loud. I have noticed on most movies since I started watching the plex online movies on my ROKU. The same thing on my DUNE HD PRO 4K with the Plex app.

Please name the actual adverts.

Watching Ender’s Game on Vizio’s Plex app and all ads are at least twice as loud as the program. An ad for The Unicorn on CBS, a Chevy truck ad, dog food ad. I just can’t remember them all. It’s like network TV in the 80’s.
