Plex has added a “Categories” tab which sorts media by its “Genres” tags. It would be useful to have similar tabs for “Directors”, “Countries” or “Studio”. Ideally, users would also have the option to hide some or all of these to prevent crowding the UI.
From my perspective, this would more fully implement the green/bud card shown by Amanda Sobrinski during her Plex Pro Week video.
I currently use collections for specific directors, countries, and studios; requiring custom sort names to keep these categories separate within the collections tab.
Just trying to clarify… do you want such tabs for ALL actors / directors / studios or just for a subset (as per your OP → “I currently use collections for specific directors, countries, and studios”)? I suppose a category tab with every cast member in your library can still be quite overwhelming…
Since the Categories tab includes all genres, it would probably make the most sense to include all directors/studios in those tabs. I agree that listing every cast member would be too much. The other reason I had not mentioned actors in my original post is that this information cannot be edited, whereas directors, countries, and studios can be manually added or removed.
Adding an actors tab would probably require a new separate tag so users could control which actors are associated with a movie.
I only use collections for “specific directors, countries, and studios” because they all have to share one tab, and having ~100 collections is a lot easier to navigate than having ~300. Let me know if you think there is a way to write this more clearly so I can edit the original post.
yeah i would love this too! maybe a tab or pinnable library with the actors, directors or writers that you could select who you wanted to show. like the pages for actors and directors plex has created are amazing and would be way more useful to push in front of myself and users rather than making smart collections all the time
