Add Discover to managed users

Considering there is already a feature for Managed Users to be either “kid-friendly” or “without restrictions”, why not just give the option to enable Discover for Managed Users and we can do the parenting for our own young ones?

Looks like this has been discussed for a while. I set up my first media server yesterday and just set up Plex on the tv. I started explaining how it works to the family and was stumped when I couldn’t search for anything outside the library and couldn’t see Discover. Took me a minute to work out it’s simply not available to managed users, so now the whole family has to use my admin account to get full functionality. Not ideal :grimacing: I hope this is implemented soon! How many votes before a suggestion is considered? I wouldn’t imagine it’s too difficult to give Discover to all users :crossed_fingers:

Adding my voice, please add this feature, I’ll toggle it off on the kids’ profiles but it’s really useful for the adult managed users!

Just adding my 2 cents as well…this lack of the Discover and “More Ways to Watch” features on managed accounts is not a mere nuisance, it’s a crippling problem as far as managing my watchlists is concerned. I really love this app/service and want to continue using it, but if this kryptonite issue doesn’t get fixed, I’ll reluctantly have to switch to a different app/service. Please fix/update ASAP as I would much prefer not to do that!

I agree with what has been said. I only use the main account for Admin. Understand that returned content is difficult to restrict but if it defaulted to disabled for managed accounts but allowed admins to turn it on if we choose that would be great

Like many others in this thread I use a managed user for all of my viewing and keep my Admin account separate. This results in the discover feature being completely useless. Making separate Plex accounts and then transferring all of the watched states to them for myself and all of my other managed users is an unnecessary PITA which requires messing with the database. I would make the switch despite the database editing, but then several webhooks which I use wouldn’t work anymore due to them requiring a separate Plex pass.

In any case, anyone who wants to take the plunge and transfer their managed users to separate Plex accounts can follow the steps here: Sync Watch History/Stats between Users : PleX

Bought a lifetime subscription specifically because I thought Discover would be a useful feature for the family.

I’ve had to request a refund because it actually breaks my main use case for plex pass. Hopefully PMs can see financial incentive in adding this feature, I can’t imagine that effort-wise it’s much more than just enabling it and adding a filter based on profile restrictions.

One of the most useful functionalities once is available for every managed user!

I would like to have Discover for managed users. I understand that kids accounts could return bad results. You could put a toggle for it in the ‘Plex Home’ → ‘User’ → ‘Restrictions’ section of the user account. And then force the Admin to toggle to ‘Enabled’ for Discovery to be used for that user. It could be set to ‘Disabled’ by default too.

+1 for adding this, its pretty crazy its not already a thing and is my current biggest gripe with Plex (e.g. if i didnt have lifetime membership, it would be a no-renew deal breaker)

Basically i use a PIN’d admin account to do all the control, and have several managed accounts across my household that already have heavily controlled access (certain library’s for certain users, restriction labels for communal libraries and such) - i really cannot understand why they do not allow Discover for managed users with the ‘safeguarding’ of an ‘Allow Discover Yes/No’ toggle, if they are really worried about things slipping through that are inappropriate (again, i already control that for existing content, so why don’t Plex trust me with Discover content?)

Please add an option to allow discover for managed accounts, if the user is a kiddo, the admin can then choose not to allow it, but if its an adult, it is allowed and it will transform the experience completely.

Right now, it is soo teasing, like you have an awesome feature, but not utilized properly, my old enough kids wont use plex as daily driver, only because they cant search for something on their own, have to ask me etc…

+1 for this as well

I think there’s a silly solution to this problem until you figure out a way to detect the content rating. Allow it to show on all managed accounts with no content restrictions, so example my and my wife’s account. The kids won’t need it anyway.

It makes 0 sense to not allow it on accounts which have no content restrictions.

Do we have any insight on when this could be applied to managed users? I noticed there is still a beta tag next to discover but I feel this is the only thing holding back the discover section. Recommendations based on each managed user is awesome and I understand there needs to be regulations in place which is the cause for delay.

It also opens up more revenue for other streaming platforms. I can do ONE search and see all the platforms I’ve added and if there is a cost associated to rent/buy it. Please add the Discover to managed users as it’s the most innovative and exciting thing in years I’ve seen for Plex and to allow my family to utilize it would make navigating a much more fulfilling experience to identify new things and where rather than going to each platform. Those other platforms don’t know what else you watch to make the best suggestions either. Plex is the homebase and it should open this door for everyone!

+1 It’s a great feature and like others have said, my admin account is used for setting up stuff and testing etc. My family and I have managed profiles for content. Please add this feature for managed profiles.

It is a great feature, and I really don’t understand why it cannot be enabled for managed users.

I think I remember seeing something from another thread with someone saying it is disabled so kids won’t see adult content, and it is mostly children that are managed users. This doesn’t make any sense at all.

If this was really the case, why not just default managed users’ Discover to disabled, and have it manually enabled for those that we want it enabled for.

Like many others on here, my admin profile is just for testing purposes, I personally use a managed user account, along with everyone else in my family.

I found a solution to access “Discover” for all accounts.

-Connect to your Plex server
-Go to account settings with admin account
-Go to “Online services”
-Go to “Discover the source”
-Click on “Edit”
-On the drop-down list, right click “Inspect”
-Look for the ID “includeDiscoverSource”

  • Modify the value of an option,
    for example: <option value="opt_out_managed">Disabled for Managed Users</option>
    with this value: <option value="opt_in">Enabled</option>

-Click “Save Changes”

Normally you should see “Discover” on managed accounts. (Works for me on android browser and app, I have yet to try on android TV)

So for the last year and a half it would only have taken them one line of code and one sentence disclaimer “Enabling for managed users has no age restriction on what they might see”.?? What in the actual f@#$?? I’m thinking there has to be some other reason than “who will protect the children’s??”

Only challenge is that while this works, doing the same thing to “Display “More Ways to Watch” Search Results” does not enable that function. So you can’t find things on other services that you want, only see them if they show up in Discover. If you have any thoughts on what else needs to be done to enable that, it would be most helpful since Plex devs couldn’t be bothered to do so.

Some minor additions/modifications on what you wrote as it was a little tricky for this non dev to figure out some bits of what you were saying. Here is what I did in Edge:

-Connect to your Plex server from a web browser
-Go to Account Settings with admin account
-Go to “Online Media Services” at the top left
-Go to “Discover the source”
-Click on “Edit”
-Hover on the drop-down list and Right Click.
-Select “Inspect”
-In the code that opens at the right, click the right facing arrow to expand the selection that includes: id=“includeDiscoverSource”
-Right click the first line that has the value “Disabled for Managed Users” and select Edit as HTML.
-Hit Enter to insert a space, Go up to the empty space and paste: opt_in
-Click anywhere else on the page to submit the change

-Back on the Plex Settings page at the right, click t the drop down menu under Discover Source and select “opt_in”.
-Click “Save Changes” button

So for “More ways to watch” I was disappointed too, but I’m still looking, because the option shows fine, but an error if you activate it.
