Add Discover to managed users

Yeah, that was the same message I got when trying it (though with less French. Still merde.)

Booooo I say, Boooooo!!!
The idea that there is no gate to content that is inappropriate for kids is kinda weak.
Plex is not playing the content, it is directing the user to where the content is.
It is then the 3rd party’s streaming service’s responsibility to provide the gates to the content provided on their platform and then guardians responsibility to set the appropriate threshold on those gates.
Change my mind.

Maybe it would be possible to link our streaming accounts such as Netflix, Prime, Disney via login credentials so Plex could then link our kids’ managed Plex accounts to their corresponding kid profiles from each of their various external streaming services that they use.
It would just be nice to be able to put all my kids watching and recommendations from our various streaming services all in one place for them.

The inspect work around seems to be patched. Whenever I click save it automatically changed back to ā€œdisable for managed usersā€ā€¦ Very annoyed with plex right now. For what seems to be a cool new feature it now useless

I just tried the work around and it is working for me.

Hi everyone! It is always interesting to see something that you have helped work on make it into the wild and see how creative people are that really want something! I will say that it is definitely not as easy as simply enabling things for managed users. As has been noted in this thread already, that scenario has caused trouble in the past. Managed users are a tough group for us as there are many different use cases for them. There are quite a few of those use cases called out here. Things like content filtering for family and children, as easy access users with the main account being more of a management config account, and a few others. We are actively in conversation internally as to how this could be done safely for the use cases that exist here.

The short answer here is that it is under consideration, and we need to make sure that we account for the different use cases and variables before final decisions are made. In the interim, stay tuned for some additional features that may help in a few of the use cases sometime earlier next year! :plexheart:

I subscribed to Plex Pass and had planned to create a curated experience for my home users / profiles (meaning pre-selected streaming providers in Discovery page) but it turns out managed users don’t have this feature and I don’t want everyone in my Pass Home to have a individual Plex user account (because then I’ll have to configure each account manually)…

I’ll have to use a different platform until this is sorted out. It’s been over 2 years always and I don’t see this happening any time soon if even Plex employees are stating it’s difficult :frowning:

Out of curiosity, what other media server platform(s) are you checking out which provide something similar to Plex’s Discover feature? Most the commentary I’ve seen in these forums regarding moving to other platforms (regarding Discover) is because they don’t have something similar, and those folks don’t want it.

Reiverr is one @pshanew . Still no app though, consider donating to the developers to speed up the development. Another alternative is Jellyseerr but then you’ll have 2 apps. Please PM me if you want to continue the discussion, I don’t think this is the right place

I’m happy to continue using Plex once managed users can access the ā€˜Discover’ page (the workaround doesn’t let user profiles ā€˜discover’ media through search so sadly it’s not that good).

+1

I just set up Plex today and I’m using a managed account for our Apple TV that’s separate from my own account/watchlist. I’d really like to be able to search across all our streaming services in one hub on the Apple TV. The feature’s there, and I’m denied it because of reasons that don’t apply to our household.

Just wanted to remind the devs that this is a feature that should be added. Restricting what managed users can and can’t view is already a feature, so applying the same logic to discover shouldn’t be a big leap. If you’re so proud of discover, then don’t you want everyone to be able to use it?

Any news on when this can be added, much needed feature.

I don’t think I want it anymore. With the html ā€œtrickā€ I made it appear in my managed users, but it automatically appeared at the top of the sidebar, so it appeared first in Home. I worry about organizing my sidebar, my managed users don’t.
So my decision has been to eliminate it, like everything that Plex adds. I’m sorry to say it but I hate the complexity of using Plex towards the server ā€œclientā€ (add to sidebar, sort…).

Alternatively, what I ended up doing is creating individual Plex accounts for my children, and adding them to my Plex Home. We can easily switch profiles from all our client apps, and I am the only one who controls the media server. They have access to the Discover section (although unrestricted), and they can add things they’d like to see to their watchlist. With these, and some extra customizations via Overseer, I am able to approve the content they watch.

But those user accounts for your kids aren’t Plex Pass holders anymore, right?

That’s right they aren’t, but is there any benefit for them to be Plex Pass users?

I honestly don’t know. I haven’t tested this scenario myself so I don’t know if they will just have all of the benefits of the Plex Pass enabled media server. One thing I’m wary of though is a seperate account will not have an rss feed for their Watchlist if they don’t have Plex Pass themselves.

+1 for this request, found a way to opt-in managed users so those users could see discover. Sadly it only seemed to link to AppleTV and didn’t show the streaming services configured under the main account so essentially useless to me at least as none of the family use AppleTV.

This feature would be most useful - I would guess one of the issues is the feeds from other services don’t come with a ratings tag for each item. Would an initial solution be to make this feature only enable for managed accounts who are set as Adult/Unrated?

Like others I can see this feature being much liked by my family (Luckly my ā€œkidsā€ are older now so I only have one left as teen)

Also, since my managed user doesn’t have access to ā€œMore ways to watchā€, I have to watchlist on the admin account and then watch on my managed user which is kind of quirky.
Because of that, I was also looking for a way to transfer the watchlist to a managed user but that doesn’t seem possible either.

This feature is definitely a step in the right direction.

Note: The ā€œDiscoverā€ workaround still works to this day.

+1 for me. My partner was scrolling through Plex looking for something to watch last night and said to me ā€˜I wish there was a way of looking at more than just what I’d downloaded for inspiration for something to watch’. I thought there was but have just realised that this is only for the admin account.

I have done the inspect and modify the drop down list bodge fix but it would be good to get a proper implementation in place.
