Add "edition" support to TV-Shows

As long as it’s actually the same episode (e.g. same duration) and assuming the videos don’t have any special visual cues/visuals/extras, you should be able to mux the „commentary“ video’s audio track into your regular episode file.
… that should at least deal with this particular use case.

Can I do that within plex or would I have find an external tool/program to do this?

MKVToolNix is your friend for jobs like this.

Thanks, much appreciated.

My wish for support for different versions of episodes still stands. Hopefully this is a feature they add soon.

What I discovered now is: you can split a series where different language or cut versions of episodes are merged into one series with multiple versions.

i.e. I have Nash Bridges in two different folders:
Nash Bridges -english
Nash Bridges -deutsch

You have to go to the series main page, click the three dots and then should be there an option do split. Shortly after a metadata refresh you will have two shows with the same name. All you have to do is to rename the shows in Plex so that you know which series is which version.

This is true, and it works, but it has its own problems (mainly with the continue watching):

This is a really really really needed feature!!
Also, if this feature is available, I would like to see an edition entry added to .plexmatch.

Would be great that there is multiple versions of individual episodes like a lot of Doctor who episodes does. Would be great when you got to such an episode in plex you get a prompt that clearly shows the labels put on the episodes and hhe choise to only play the episodes with this tag. Like a show that is in black and white but has a color version, when you start the series you have the option to “play only editions with this specific tag” so it would be consistent and play the color versionsduring this viewing. Thisbwould reset if you have been gone a while or start over.

This is exactly why I need this feature! I have my whole collection of Doctor Who Blu-Rays ripped to my hard drive, I created a “Show” called Doctor Who extras to put them in but having the “Editions” feature would save so much clutter

Hello, I wanted to suggest a feature that I missed. I looked for a similar topic here, but I couldn’t find it. If it exists, I apologize, it may have gone unnoticed, but enough of this nonsense… This feature is the possibility of changing the media in the player. For example: Naruto TV Series, episode 01, I have two versions. Apparently, Plex knows and lists these media. It is possible to play the version you want in “Play version…”, but this is so hidden and not at all intuitive. There could be an option in the player to see the existing options. It could also be clearer on the episode page itself. A combo box of the versions before playing would be ideal. And, not to ask too much, in a way to define which of these versions should be the default for execution. And finally, I would like to point out that this is present and well developed in competitors. Finally, if you have any questions, I can provide more details and purposes. Thank you!

Agreed. I would very much appreciate this, at both the series and episode levels. For example, I may want to add both the “Remastered” and original versions of Star Trek The Original Series, and have them separated at the series level.

And for episode level editions, and example would be Battlestar Galactica, where the blu-rays include both the original versions of episodes, and extended versions of certain episodes, (but not all of them). So I’d like to be able to have them both show up in the same series.

+1 for this

This would be great. I have Disney’s 1957 “Zorro” in its original B&W and the colorized version they made in the 1980s. I’d love to have them as two series.

+1 on this. Some Anime have different versions of the same episode (different ‘routes’ in the story). Sometimes it’s in the middle of the season. Would be really nice to be able to add a modifier to the file naming to keep the episode ‘in order’, IE:

Show_S01E01
Show_S01E02
Show_S01E03-v1
Show_S01E03-v2
Show_S01E04

I know it’s been a couple years since this was suggested, but I’d like to voice +1 support for this. In addition to multiple versions of Classic Doctor Who, I’d like to be able to easily designate between the original or remastered versions of Star Trek.

I hope you clicked the “vote” button at the top of the thread!

Heck yeah, I did!

Voted +1 as well, baffling that this is only available for movies.

Would be neat. I have an alternate and longer finale episode for a tv series in my personal library. It’s not an extended or deleted scene; it’s an entire episode.

Spider-Noir (2026)

Hi Plex Team,

currently Plex supports multiple editions for movies using the {edition-*} naming format, which works really well for alternate movie versions like:

  • Black & White

  • Colorized

  • Director’s Cut

  • Extended Edition

  • Remastered

However, this functionality is missing completely for TV episodes.

This becomes a problem for shows that have multiple legitimate versions of the same episode, for example:

  • Black & White vs Colorized

  • Original Broadcast vs Remastered

  • Uncut vs TV Cut

  • Alternate Language Cuts

  • Different Regional Versions

Right now, Plex merges these files into a single episode and only exposes them as hidden “versions”, without any meaningful label visible in the UI.

Example:

Show Name (2025) - s01e01 - Pilot [Black and White].mkv
Show Name (2025) - s01e01 - Pilot [Colorized].mkv

Plex recognizes them as the same episode, but there is no clean way for users to:

  • visibly distinguish the versions

  • select a preferred version

  • display version names in the UI

  • organize alternate episode cuts properly

Movie editions already solve this problem perfectly.

Requested Feature

Please add support for episode editions / alternate episode versions using something similar to:

Show Name - s01e01 {edition-Black and White}.mkv
Show Name - s01e01 {edition-Colorized}.mkv

Or introduce a dedicated syntax for TV episodes.

Suggested UI Behavior

Inside an episode page Plex could display:

  • Episode 1 — Original

  • Episode 1 — Colorized

  • Episode 1 — Extended Cut

Similar to how movie editions already work.

Why This Matters

There are many real-world use cases:

  • classic shows with restored/colorized releases

  • anime broadcast vs Blu-ray versions

  • censored vs uncensored releases

  • regional edits

  • fan restorations

  • remastered archival content

At the moment there is no clean or official way to handle this in Plex.

Thanks!
