"Add Folder" External drives showing up as globes / servers - can't drill down

Running latest Plex media server on a Mac mini, latest OS as of this posting. I deleted the whole Plex app according to official instructions (including Library folders and terminal command) and reinstalled already but no luck.

Basically external drives (like “LARDER” in screenshot) — USB or in a USB-attached drive bay show up as “globes” (see pic) and I can’t drill down within them to get to a specific folder of media.

You’ll see that Time Machine images are showing up too, one of my USB attached drives is for TM. Weird.

Is that screenshot from your /Volumes/ directory?
Is the USB bay mounted and accessible?

Thanks for your reply. All drives are USB mounted and accessible yes. If I scroll up in the above screenshot I see this, which shows the current path — and also shows a bunch of what I think are Mac OS level “invisible” volumes? Preboot etc.
