Add ip address manually to access a plex server

There used to be an option in chrome caster and others to add the ip for a server to connect to directly. But it was removed so the connection is via the cloud now.

It may have been to make things simpler and avoid error setup.

But here the other day cloudflare went down and nothing worked, so this thing of it being controlled in cloud makes plex vulnerable to down time if the cloud can’t be reached.

Therefor to prevent this in the future I think it would be nice to have this option back again where we can add the ip manually. So at least we can watch plex when the internet is down.

In the samsung and roku apps i am able to set the ip address of the local server. The Nvidia shield does not have this feature for the player. I enjoy the shield as it has a 1gb port on it unlike samsung tvs and roku’s. Some higher rate videos are at the 100mb level making watching requiring to transcode the stream instead of watching at direct playback as the port can’t handle it. Watching the traffic from the shield it sends it out to the internet and back in, instead of direct playing to the local server as i am guessing is because it can’t see the local server as it isn’t on the same subnet.

If you’ve segregated your home network on purpose, you could also tell the server which subnets to consider part of that home network. Otherwise, even a manually entered IP in the client might be considered a remote connection.

In Plex Web:
Settings > [Server Name] > Network > LAN Networks

Yep have done that, still routes outside.

Can you force-quit the app / restart the shield to to make sure there’s no cached network settings?
How do you check if the stream is local vs. remote?

i have a firewall, and can see the traffic going external, and able to monitor how much is going out and coming back in. Able to tell it is going external, as appose to internally subnet to subnet traffic.
