How do I manually add a local Plex Server?

My Shield TV cannot find my local PleX server. The reasons for this are complicated but manually specifying it has worked for years and I have no intention of changing my network. I do not run a server on the Shield TV. My other PleX clients have a manually add server option. Is this hidden on the Shield client or has it been removed? Could it be put back? Of course I can log into my account and add it from there but then it streams over the internet ( I have checked that). Unless there is a really good technical reason for it not being there why on earth would someone even think of removing it?

In the meantime I have had to use MrMC and Kodi. This is really, really annoying.

It appears you have answered your own question but won’t admit it! . :((

Time for a change

Using the manually specified server IP is an old method that isn’t really encouraged to be used anymore. Instead, log PMS and your devices back into Plex.tv, then in Plex Web go to

Settings \ Server \ Network \ LAN Networks

In that box, manually enter all the local subnets you use. PMS will then try these addresses as local.

There doesn’t seem to be a setting for LAN Networks. There is a tick mark for automatic discovery of local networks (GDM). There is also

“List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth”

That doesn’t sound like what you are talking about.

Where are you saying to enter the local information and are you talking about entries like 10.0.1.0/25, 192.168.2.0/24 ?

Out I manage to do all of this then how will I know I am accessing a local PMS as opposed to the same PMS but via the Internet, which is what seems to be happening?

Hmm. That’s odd. What version of Web are you using?

Ok, I see it now. Can I just add in a specific ip, such as 192.168.2.13, or even 192.168.2.0/24 to get any server on the 192.168.2.xxx local network?

It seems to have worked though I have no way of knowing if the connection is local! Is there some way of telling? It would be nice to not have to log into my account which I seem to have to do.

Go to the server selector, it should tell you there how the client sees the server. The choices are “nearby/local” (same network) or “remote” (not same network).
