Add option to transcode in AV1 in real time, or after the recording to advanced DVR options

Server Version#::1.32.0.6918-6f393eda1

Please add the option to re-encode after the DVR processing scripts to encode in software to AV1, and ideally make this a distinct per show/movie option under advanced for archived shows/movies, vs for daily news that I don’t want it done with.

Edit: I stated VC1 when I meant AV1

Curious. Why VC1? That codec is pretty much dead as far as usage now.

It makes nice and tiny files.

Show the quantitative comparison of VC1 vs HEVC vs H264 vs M2TS and I will present it.

In the future, Please place this in Feature Request and NOT splatter the forum.

MODERATOR EDIT: Changed feature tags and category

Noted about the tags. I was unaware of feature requests and have edited it. Also, I meant AV1, not VC1…

There are only a few AV1 hardware encoders out there.

FFMPEG just got AV1 hardware decode for those with capable GPUs

I would wait and resubmit this request if/after AV1 encoding is available.

Remember,

Not everything can play AV1 content natively so it makes no sense to have it has a transcode target (output).

Encoding to AV1 only to turn around and transcode to H264 defeats the purpose.

Pretty sure I mentioned software. I would imagine it would be a rather trivial to add options as to what format a user wants for output to be added to expand this to other formats including sound codecs.

I have some HD Homerun Extends, and the hardware encodings look like junk. There are options for other tuners to manually define a transcode. I wanted to do it in software, and later hardware support would be able to be added easy enough.

Software encoding of AV1 is not a CPU-trivial task.

As for HW encoding from a Silicon Dust tuner isn’t the tuner’s fault.
Have you examined the crap bitrates being streamed by the providers these days?
( 3-4 Mbps 1080p )

I had a silicon dust HDHR3. With 20+ Mbps video inbound , the image was perfect

CPU is plentiful here.

Yeah, the bitrate is very bad and most still only broadcast 720 here, sadly. I have been advertising my HD Homeruns for sale to change for a model thats not the Extend so I can have options for a transcode thats sane. Even the highest profile transcode setting is very bad on the device, I have it disabled. Most of the stuff I archive is 480p, anyway, but I would have liked them to be even smaller hence the request for AV1 (NOT VC1, sorry.)

Take my original statement

Change it to be:

Show the quantitative comparison of AV1 vs HEVC vs H264 vs M2TS and I will present it

Offer still stands

Include processing details to achieve (replicate) the results provided.

But there was pretty graphs

I don’t want someone else’s analysis.

We’ve already examined those internally.
