Added a new drive, now when it scans, it scans everything

Added a second external hard drive to my setup, and now any time I add something new and scan the library, movies or tv, it scans the entire library as if it’s all new, instead of just noticing the new stuff. Searched the forum, found threads about something similar with music, except I’m not having issues canceling the scan.

I did not move anything from the original drive, or change any drive letters, or change any file paths. Just added a new drive.

Did you add a top directory, as in:

  • d-Drive
    • Medias
      • Movies
      • Shows

Yeah, everything in the new drive is identical to the old one except for the drive letter.

And movies are in separate folders, not in the root of the movie folder?

Not always. I typically only do that if there’s external subs or something. But, as you can see by the dates on my old drive, I’ve had it that way for years without issue. Is that what’s causing the problem?

Honestly a lot of those are DVD rips from before I started going HD so they probably need some maintenance

Do you see any results returned if you filter your library by “Unmatched?”

I do, but it’s almost entirely special features from TV shows. Should I look through for actual programming and force match?

I’d recommend trying to get to a point where everything is matched, yes. My preferred way of doing that is to correct whatever naming/organization problem is causing it not to be matched, if any exists. Fixing match (forcing) is a last resort, in my book.

So which folder has been added to the Plex library?
Was it X:\Media B\Movies
or X:\Media B
or even just X: ?

Only the first would be correct. And the last would cause many, many rescans and long scan times.

And adding to @OttoKerner here:

From the naming guide:

Movie files can be placed into individual folders and this is recommended, as it can (sometimes significantly) increase the speed of scanning in new media.

You can see my file paths in the screenshot

I’m going to give everything its own folder and try again

No, I actually cannot.
The Windows file explorer screenshot doesn’t tell what is relevant here.

The information I am after can be seen in the properties of the Plex library, on its tab “Add Folders”.

Like this:

It’s right at the top,
79a82bb46cc9039e1f167e99fecd1c5d6d3751a7

but if you want to see it twice
the processing folder is just for videos where I haven’t checked the quality, subtitles, etc. yet.

What library settings do you have checked here?

Are you initiating a manual scan of the library after you add something?

And for the record, I’ve now got everything properly subfoldered, scanned it all in, and it has not fixed the issue.

Son of a ■■■■■. Is this the problem? Why didn’t this happen before? I’ll let it scan again and see if checking that box fixes it

Keep in mind depending on how your file system is set up it may take a minute for Plex to initiate the partial scan for a newly added file

I have a server on a NAS and those files get picked up immediately because the files are on the same device. My server on Windows takes about a minute and it may seem as though it’s not working

I’m pretty sure someone sneaks into my house at night and unchecks those little boxes on all my apps. We’ve all been there. Hopefully that’s all it is
