Adding a 2nd Apple TV into the mix

Hello,

I've had a problem and thought it might be straight forward. I've attempted to add a second Apple TV into my existing connection. I've followed the same instructions (well , the instructions I thought I'd have to carry through without doubling up on the already done stuff) and have run into some trouble.

Firstly, is there instructions on adding a second apple TV into my python/plex setup? I've pointed to the certificate, but am thinking there's something not right about that.

I'm attempting to use the existing PlexConnect.pyc shortcut. Could it be there's something more I need to do to a config file?

Here's some details.

- Apple TV Model: MD199X/A

- Apple TV Serial: DY3MKB22FF54

- Apple TV Software 6,1(6698.99.16)

- Apple TV I.P Address 192.168.0.34

- Plex Server I.P Address: 192.168.0.12

- Apple TV DNS: 192.168.0.12

A copy of my settings.cfg file

[PlexConnect]
enable_plexgdm = True
ip_pms = 192.168.178.10
port_pms = 32400
enable_dnsserver = True
port_dnsserver = 53
ip_dnsmaster = 8.8.8.8
prevent_atv_update = True
enable_plexconnect_autodetect = True
ip_plexconnect = 0.0.0.0
hosttointercept = trailers.apple.com
port_webserver = 80
enable_webserver_ssl = True
port_ssl = 443
certfile = ./assets/certificates/trailers.pem
loglevel = Normal
logpath = .

To add a second Apple TV device, you just need to copy the same certificate to it that you used for the first Apple TV and configure the DNS settings. Don’t create new certificates. There is no changes required on the PlexConnect or Python side of things.

and you can only have one instance of plexconnect running on the machine, so dont try and start a new session with plexconnect.py/pyc

Are you talking about the plex server?

Can I have both apple tvs --> plex running concurrently pointing to the same server?

I created a new certificate that's newer than the original and applied it via the entry into the send data to apple... and via the iphone utility, but surely this isn't a cert problem?  Everything else appears to be ok. It just says to me that trailers is unavailable , try again later.

There can only be one certificate installed on PlexConnect.  Your mistake was creating a new certificate for the the new Apple TV.  Copy the same certificate to both Apple TV devices and ensure there is only the one matching certificate on your installation of PlexConnect.

Multiple AppleTVs can access the same PMS server at the same time.

Wow.. as simple as that. Done.. Works.. great job thank you kindly.

I was curious about signing on to the newly added Apple TV. I want to add my living room Apple TV to the mix, and figure I would get a second Plex account to help ensure that what someone watches upstairs doesn't interfere with what someone watches downstairs. Will getting a 2nd Plex account complete that?

as far as I know Multi user/Watched Status etc only works if the server is logged in with a Plexpass account.  If thats what you mean by Watches, if you just mean what is streamed to the device, that should work even with one account as the ATV has a unique ID.

I have 3 Apple TVs in my house.  The one in my son's room is signed in with a different Plex account so he has his own watched status for everything in the library (and I can selectively choose which libraries I share with him) and it doesn't interfere with my watched status on the other two devices.  I believe this does require a PlexPass account on the main account.  The additional user accounts can be the free kind.

How can you loggin another account? You're running two plexconnect ?

Just one Plex Server and one instance of PlexConnect running.  On the Apple TV client, in the PlexConnect settings there is a place to sign in with user name and password for myPlex account.

You can force the clients to have to be logged in by setting option on Plex server to "Require Authorization on local network".

When i try to sign in it says "Failed" any idea why ?

Forget that. Username doesn't work, gotta enter the email address.

That's weird.

I log in with usernames on my PlexConnect Apple TV clients.

OK so I should get ahead and get a PlexPass account and sign in with that account on the Plex Media Server. Then on my Apple TV in the downstairs den I'll sign on with my Plex account so I have a watched/unwatched list, and in the upstairs living room Apple TV sign on with my Dad's new Plex account and he'll have his watched/unwatched list. Yes?

Sounds good to me

I don't think that those personal watch states are a feature of PlexPass...

Actually this info seems to clarify that is what it does. Of course though I am unsure if PlexConnect is dovetailed to this or not, and maybe that is where you are coming from? I would love to get some clarity on this. I think that getting the PlexPass any way long over due (the value of Plex Media Server and PlexConnect has been incredible) but since this will be the first feature I am looking to get from the PlexPass fee it important.

I can confirm that PlexConnect supports multiple users logging in with separate Plex accounts with each having their own watched statuses.

The Plex Server has to be logged in with a PlexPass subscription account to support this.

The additional Plex accounts can be the free kind.

Ok... I surrender. :-D
