Adding Music Album only Downloads Album metadata but does not refresh Artist

As I add to music library I’ve noticed that when I add an album for an artist which already exists plex will correctly download and load the metadata for the album but does not refresh the artist. To reproduce do the following:

Do the following:

  • Add tags your music file from MusicBranz Picard (ID3v2.4 is what I’m using).
  • Add one album for an artist which does not exist in your library and has one genre type.
  • Scan library and ensure plex picks it up. No problems so far.
  • Now add a second album for the same artist as above and ENSURE the genre type is different.
  • Scan library and ensure plex picks it up.

Result:
At the album level the genre is picked up but the new genre from the second album is NOT at the artist level.

Workaround:
Force a refresh of the artist.

Ideally, when an album is added plex should refresh the metadata for the artist also to ensure it picks up any new metadata items at the artist level.

Did you either refresh the web app or navigate away from this artist and re-entered it afterwards?

Can you repeate the test, but leave the artist be and let the server sit overnight and let the next server maintenance period pass?
Then re-visit the artist page and see if the new genre is still missing.

Yeap, its not a browser cache refresh issue.

Sure, I’ll do that tonight and see if its refreshed.

Leaving the artist overnight had no effect. Plex did not refresh the artist profile.

Yep, that seems like undesirable behaviour.

I’ll confirm on my end and get a fix out for this.

As an FYI I checked the Periodic metadata refresh and it reported 0 artists even after approx 50 or albums where added yesterday without a force refresh done on the music library afterwards. But I guess that specific refresh might only kick in for albums released recently rather than added recently.

The periodic metadata refresh needs approx. 3 to 4 weeks to go through your library. It would be wasteful to update it too frequently.

Really, had thought that Periodic metadata refresh message from butler was related to recently released content. I check this every few days and it mostly aligns to newly added content. So like TV shows or Movies released in the past number of weeks. But not sure how it relates to albums/artists.

BTW… I typically force refresh all my libraries one a week so I have the latest and most up to date metadata as I hate it going stale :slight_smile: Even doing this weekly you would be very surprised how much changes, especially casts.

@drzoidberg33 one thing to consider would be Various Artists. Some folks could have 100s (maybe even 1,000s) of albums with that. You (plex team) may not want to refresh the metadata for everything when adding a album there as it could take a LONG time and cause folks to report problems.

Still, would like to see this refresh the artist when adding an album :slight_smile:
