I’m setting up a managed user account for my son and am able to filter the shared content, but I can’t find were to remove the news and podcast menu items from the online content menu. Is this possible?

It’s in your account settings.
Set it to ‘Disabled for managed users’.

Other members of your home, which have a plex.tv account of their own must do this themselves.
But you can do it for them, if you know their PIN.
First, you ‘Switch User’ account
Then you can make the changes in the Account settings.
(you can take the opportunity to make an avatar picture for them and set the language preferences according to their needs)
Afterwards, you switch back to your own user.
