Server Version#: 6 (Plex for Samsung)
Player Version#: 5.49.2
Hello everybody,
I’m going to add my USB drives to my router as I don’t want to keep a NAS running throughout the day and evening. I do usually just watch my content directly via the USB input on the TV. However, as I’m sure many people are aware Samsung does not support the DTS codec (cheap sods) but the Plex app can transcode ‘on-the-fly- to Dolby Surround which saves me having to convert hundreds and hundreds of MKV files. Anyway, does anyone know of a simple guide that I can use for setting up a “manual server“ on the Samsung TV Plex app?
I’m running the Tizen-Samsung TV Plex media server. Here is the netgear FAQ guiding people on how to add USB drives/media libraries to the Plex server via their routers:
If you do not need fancy transcoding features then you do not need to run Plex on your NAS. You can simply run it on a fairly cheap computer connected to your network.
As far as accessing your content goes you can leave it on your NAS but that then requires the NAS be up and running whenever you use Plex or you can directly connect the drive(s) to the computer directly (via USB or whatever) and then access it through Plex. That is what I do.
It works very well for me and I have no problems with accessing my content that way but I have a lot of content so I have a large number of USB drives connected to my Plex server and I run StableBit’s DrivePool to combine and manage the drives. I find that superior to running a true NAS.
I also do not really like all the complexities that running a NAS entails.
You need Plex Media Server running somewhere. That could be your NAS if it’s a model that supports Plex Media Server, you can check in the NAS’s app store.
Otherwise, an old computer you have lying around will also work.
If your goal is you don’t want something running 24/7, then Plex is not the solution for you as Plex does need to be running 24/7.
Actually that is not totally true. I think it should read, “Plex does need to be running whenever you want to access your media.”
I would find the need to start Plex every time I wanted to watch something to be excessively intrusive. I do not really see any valid reason to not have Plex available 24/7.
