Adjusting video quality Plex for Mac

Hello everyone!

I am new to the forums and have recently been using the Plex for Mac app. I have recently encountered difficulty when changing the video setting to original quality when starting a tv show or movie.

I am physically unable to click fast enough to change it and it kicks me out. This has just been recent. Video quality is the only thing I have changed and it works great.

Not sure if there is a setting in the app or something I am missing.

Any suggestions to get around this would be great. If I have posted this in the wrong section, my apologies.

Would you mind to elaborate a bit of where you experience this (especially what you mean by being kicked out)?
Also… what version of Plex for Mac do you have installed?

I cannot seem to reproduce a situation where the video playback settings go away or “kick me out”…

Thanks for your response. I will do my best to elaborate.

I am using app version 1.41.0.2876-e960c9ca

Where I experience difficulty is once I have logged in and select a TV show or movie from my friends server.

I used to be able to change the video quality from the player window. If I can’t/don’t change the video quality to original I get a playback error, conversion failed. the transcoder exited due to an error.

What’s happening is, I am unable to click fast enough to change the video quality to original and get the error I mentioned.

Is there a setting I can change to fix this?

You can set this as a general remote streaming quality preference.

Settings > Plex for Mac > Quality > Internet Streaming > Video quality

Edit: as for why this happens, your friend probably needs to check out their server; not sure if/what’s broken but basic transcoding shouldn’t just fail (so much for the theory).

Hello again,

I’ll check with my friend regarding his server. He seems to think there is no issue as he doesn’t have the same issue I have.

What would your recommendation be for me to tell him what to check? Should he turn off transcoding? I’m not very technical and appreciate your assistance.

Simply disabling transcoding won’t work. The server is transcoding the video for a reason – if your friend disables transcoding, you’ll simply get an error message that the video cannot be played.

As for what to check… that’ll very much depend on their setup.
Common checks should include updating their server… beyond that they’ll probably need to check the server logs for what’s actually causing the error.
