The conversion can not be switched off

Hello dear Plex user,
I’ve had a big problem for some time now, that I can not solve on my own.
Among other things, I have installed the Plex app on my HiMedia Q10Pro multimedia box (android system) and use it to access the films of my NAS system. This is a QNAP TS-453A.
The devices are integrated via LAN in my home network via a switch. Playback is via a projector. My internet speed is absolutely sufficient!
Now the problem:
When I play a movie, the film jerks and has short dropouts. However, if I use the multimedia box to pull the folder’s own folder structure from the NAS, it will run perfectly.
Meanwhile, I’ve discovered that it’s because Plex adjusts the quality of the movies ??? !!! I do not want that! The film should simply be played in original quality.

Consequently, I have chosen the following settings in the Plex-App on the HiMedia:
Settings> Quality> Video Quality> Auto Adjust Quality OFF
Settings> Quality> Internet Streaming> Play back smaller videos in original quality “On”
Settings> Quality> Home Network Streaming> Use recommended settings (1080p video at less than 20 Mbps will be rendered in original quality “On”

If I now go to the presentation page of a film and look there in the information, I am told that the playback is running with the original quality.
If I start the film now, it jerks! Then I go during the settings in the settings, is at the point “Quality” = Convert (4.2 Mbps, 1080p HD) … WHY ??? !!!
Of course I change this point manually in “Original quality 1080p HD”, but when I watch a new movie, he jumps back into the conversion mode!
I am grateful for any advice.
PS: Am an absolute forum newcomer!

Welcome to Plex!
this is actually a feature… the Plex client app checks the playback capabilities of the device and then asks the Plex Server to provide the video in a supported format. This can be different containers (mp4, mkv, avi) or audio/video stream codecs (video: h264, h265, vc1…; audio: ac3, aac, dts…) and their bitrates or levels.
There are references where the client app isn’t getting all the supported scenarios and the server ends up transcoding stuff that might actually have played nicely. I’ve experienced that a lot with Android TV in the past.

You should also check if there’s eg. subtitles involved – most clients have issues displaying subtitles and request the server to burn those into the video (=transcoding).

With a NAS as your server, any transcoding is likely to be too much.

Do you have an option for home network streaming to use “Original Quality 1080p HD” instead of recommended settings?

Hello Tom,

I have already read in forums that seemingly Plex decides on the basis of some values to transcode.

But … I own a home theater and have been using Plex for some time now. Therefore, I can say that I NEVER had problems streaming the “quality of the videos” only 1: 1.
Mostly I give .MKV files again. But as I said, it worked! And it still works, but you have to adjust during each movie playback manuel during the movie in the settings and there “original quality”.

I think that there may be a software bug from Plex. For example, as part of an update. Why is not there just a switch in the Plex software with which I can turn off transcoding to 100%?

I switched off the conversion in all setup areas. Even shortly before the beginning of the movie shows me the info window> “no transcoding”! When the movie starts, does Plex jump to transcode?!

As I said, I can also watch the movies directly via the Android box. So without the Plex Player to use. The videos are perfectly played without problems!

In the Android Box I have under “Home Network Streaming” only the ability to “1080p videos with less than 20 Mbit / s in original quality play”. Otherwise, I have to define a bit rate here … but that should not be so

I’ve just seen that I’m not the only one with this problem!
