Quality of all videos dropped about a year ago without any changes

About a year ago all of my Plex videos started playing with really poor quality. The mkv files are 480p. When I play the source DVD on the TV the picture looks like it should at 480p, but when I play the file it looks more like 240p. I’ve selected original quality from the settings. I’ve tried to look up some troubleshooting steps, but haven’t been able to get anything to work.

Playing on a 4k tv and I realize that 480p is not going to be HD quality, but it is not even showing up in SD quality.

What information is showing in the “now playing” tile for that playback on the Plex server dashboard?
I’m particularly interested if the stream is listed as local, remote or indirect, and if there’s any transcoding.

Thank you Tom! I looked at that screen and my files were being transcoded.

Disabled it and they are back to playing at the original quality.

I don’t know how that setting got changed in the first place.

Thanks for your help.
