What about these new unskippable ads when playing your own media?
I feel like Iâve gotten my moneyâs worth for Plex Pass over the years, but this has me looking for an alternative.
That happens when you play something that both you and Plex have available. I believe by default it selects the Plex version - you need to make sure to select your version.
If you have not disabled Plexâs video streaming sources then you can play one of their videos when you meant to play one of your files.
This is always the cause of this report. It is an easy mistake to make, they will slip their version into your Continue Watching shortcuts, for example.
No. Right now the last source from where you played from should be what is populating Continue Watching.
Not unless the original source is unreachable AND you have Watch State Sync enabled AND you have our content source enabled. We are not intentionally âpushingâ our content over top of personal servers. As you said, you or any user can disable our catalog if they choose to.
I have all streaming sources disabled. Iâve never used Plex for anything but my own media. This just started today. And, to be fair, has only happened once, but it was frustrating. A silent, still ad also came up when I paused it. Just now, while verifying that somehow streaming services werenât enabled, I was unable to make the ads show again. Maybe it was just some weird error? Very glad that I havenât seen a plethora of posts about this. I was afraid I was going to have to find a new media server and/or player.
On what platform / which version of the Plex app do you experience this?
In the past, thereâs been individual reports where some smart TVs injected ads into the video player. Not saying thatâs what happens to you⊠but knowing some details about your setup could help to pin this down.
Iâm pretty sure Amazon has started doing that.
Plex staff have commented before to explain that how itâs all built, itâs inconceivable that ads would play for local content. Thereâs always a chance of a major whoops but the evidence we have so far is that something else is probably going on.
Iâd look up how to capture Plex logs and be ready to do that if it happens again. Iâd take pics of the adds too, especially if there is any GUI on the screen that could tie them to Plex.
If there actually is a new bug that makes this happen, you will get all the internet points!
Maybe it was not checked as rigorously in the past? Long ago I would regularly have multiple Continue Watching options, one for my files, and one for Plexâs version of the show. My file was absolutely available while the Plex version was offered right next to it.

Correct. You can still do this on Web. The ordering there is dependant on the pinning order.
I should have been more clear, the behavior I mentioned is for any clients with the new experience.
If you didnât disable our Movies and TV Show catalog then there is a chance that you could select have selected the title from our catalog. Check on app.plex.tv and in Settings there is Online Media Sources. Disable whatever sources or features youâd like.
And just to add a quick nugget to Atomatthâs post, be sure to select âDisabledâ - not âDisabled for Managed Usersâ. 
This definitely happened on my own media. I know this because I had to search for subtitles for the same episode that displayed the advertisement, and when you search for subtitles, it shows you the filename for the source.
That said, even though I had turned off streaming services in the client, they were still enabled in the Online Media Sources setting, so Iâve turned those off, too. Hopefully I donât see any more ads before being able to watch my own media.

Have you tried to recreate the ad play? You mentioned it happened only on one video, have you tried playing that one again to see if it pops up ads again?
I think youâre probably keying in on my replies. It only happened to me once, on one video, and I havenât been able to get the ads to pop up again.
