I’m suddenly getting ads when watching on mobile with my collection, not plex, and this started a few days ago. There was no app update to cause this, just started happening. I have plex pass lifetime membership and this has never happened before. Works fine at home through the browser or windows app, even the Samsung and xbox apps don’t do this. Only the mobile app now.
I know nothing changed so this has to be a bug. And my. Apologies if this is the wrong area. My. Searches for potential categories brings up nothing as well as a search through the forums for a similar issue brought no results as well.
Any help would be appreciated since my lunch break is only 30 minutes. Multiple breaks of 30 second ads I’m not supposed to see are a nuisance.
If you are using the Watch List, keep an eye out which media sources are listed for a particular title and make sure to pick the one from your own server,
and not the one called “Movies & TV Shows [on Plex]” which is the ad-supported one.
Well I am using my own server since plex doesn’t even have the shows I’m watching. I’m very familiar with plex and while I know I can make a mistake, I’m not making one here. I have all my sources pinned properly with the plex sources all the way at the bottom. I’m continuing my videos that I was watching from home on my pc, through the app. But I get ads.
Then please enable debug logging on both your Plex server and the Plex app on your phone. Recreate the issue and as soon as the ad has been played and the movie resumes, stop and fetch the log files.
So after getting my lady to turn on TeamViewer for me to access my pc, I went ahead and did a quick search in plex for the current show I’m watching. Turns out plex added specific seasons of it. What I don’t understand is why, if I’m continuing where I left off from my personal media, it’s choosing plexs service to continue where it left off, rather than my personal media.
Definitely a little bug for sure, in my opinion, but just wished I had searched first and figured it out before bothering you and others here. I think I may submit the logs to the proper channel when I get home in case this is a little annoying bug.
Thank you for your input and trying to help me out. Greatly appreciated.
If Plex’s streaming service has a show that you are currently watching from your own media… And if you have Plex’s streaming service pinned to your sources… Then it will offer both your copy and their copy of the show to Continue Watching. It’s easy to click the wrong one because the thumbnails look very similar.
I think if Plex just made the thumbnails for their content super obviously different somehow, it would help a lot.
Given that people can switch the thumbnail for their shows from the available options, or even download options from the internet for Plex to choose one that no one else is using would not be feasible. They are operating from the same choices. I overcome this by not pinning Plex’s media to my home screen (except for Live TV) and going directly to “More” → “Plex” when I need to watch something they have (which I do often because they have some shows I used to watch as a kid that I cannot find on DVD anywhere)
On the otherhand, I also use overlays for my own content to indicate the show’s status (cancelled, ended, continuing, airing). I actually do not like excessive overlays (I’ve seen some people put show rating, codec, awards, nominations and other stuff on there) and all I needed to know was whether there’ll be more episodes coming or not. As something that you can immediately control and implement, I might suggest doing the same so you can differentiate your own content.
I use Plex Meta Manager for my overlays. I only chose show status (and movie resolution) but there are several more options, including the ones I find un-appealling. There was one that I thought was useful which showed whether or not there are post credit scenes but it is not obvious at first sight and I still find it hideous. If Plex was to implement some of those options, I would be less likely to pin the content.
My issue was that I had multiple episodes that were still incomplete because they were saved from watching in multiple apps/locations. So plex decided to add their content to my list, yet I never watched it from there. I agree that it should not show up unless I specifically selected and started watching the show from plexs library, not my own. That needs to be changed. Pin or no pin. I don’t use plex media content, only purchased the pass so I can use my content and to share with my frand family.
Either way, thank you for the help. Had my first baby a few weeks ago and my brain hasn’t been firing on all cylinders lately.
