Advanced options for Cinema Trailers // mod: trailer based on selected movie

Hi Plex community, I recently got Plex Pass and have been playing with Cinema Trailers feature. The current trailers shown are mostly independent, animated and documentary films, which aren’t that appealing for a cinema like experience. Also, the current options of choosing what trailers to show are very limited and irrelevant. There should be an option whereby the cinema trailers would run based on the language of the movie, that is about to play, e.g. Italian mainstream movie trailers for an Italian movie, Hindi mainstream movie trailers for a Hindi movie and mainstream Hollywood trailers for an English movie etc. I think this feature needs a massive overhaul to make it more relevant to what it’s meant to deliver. Currently, it’s a big let-down. Please vote this topic if you agree.

Oh boy, many good ideas… right now, the idea behind trailers obviously had been “better odd trailers than none”.

ATM, you cannot manage trailers that get downloaded to your PMS.
I have English trailers loaded to my movies by Plex though I told Plex that I want German trailers. I can only get rid of these foreign-language trailers if I manually load my own trailer (German) to the same movie folder (which then gets preferred). But I cannot delete those darn English trailers, so for movies without a German trailer that I can add, I still have to live with English trailers presented to me.

As long as no management console gets implemented and user preferences are not respected regarding languages of trailers, you will probably not see any fine grained solution for cinema trailers.

I disabled cinema trailers feature long ago since it doesn’t work well for non-US audience.

Trailers are just another immature feature obviously implemented by the usual tech guys who don’t focus on the audience but on the max number of trailers available (and that is “English trailers”).

  • Respect any language setting for trailers/library language
  • Allow the client user to overrule (with a new client setting to use trailer language of movie to be played) for cinema trailers (this does not make sense for local trailers atm).
  • Make local trailers (downloaded by Plex) deletable (or marked as no-show).
  • Don’t use English movie titles for downloaded trailers in other languages, but use the title field of the movie. If I watch a nice trailer, Plex presents the English title in the player UI, leaving me sitting in front of the TV guessing the German name of the movie).
  • Make trailer texts editable.
  • Allow a matrix of “allowed age ratings” for trailers. In my household, no kids are watching Plex. And open it completely for non-US age ratings, evn if they don’t follow your house rules (like the German FSK 0/FSK 6/FSK 12/FSK 16/FSK 18 ratings). Remember that the ag rating field is editable and third party agents can fill it, so scan the libraries for available age ratings or use the excellent Wikipedia matrix for your code.
  • If the movie of a trailer is available in the same PMS library as the movie to be watched (which seldomly happens for cinema trailers, but almost all the times for local trailers), give the use a “watch this movie” button.
  • give the user a choice of “never again show this trailer” which avoids this trailer in any future trailer loop (local or cinema).
  • What’s true for age ratings regarding trailers is also true for genres. Make sure to give the PMS admin a choice of mixing different genres that are “okay” or “not okay” for trailers.
  • Make sure to allow the admin to get rid of trailers or avoid them for whatever reason the PMS owner has (religious reasons, ban movies from certain countries, disallow genres (see above).
