Advice on Adding My Dolby Vision Media To Plex

Have been adding content to Plex for the past 12 months using my Synology NAS.

I have recently upgraded my TV to a new LG Oled model and now have a collection of 4k dvd’s I want to add to Plex and am looking for some advice as to the best way to achieve this.

Some of these are in HDR10 and others in Dolby Vision. So I was planning on getting a suitable drive to rip them and add to Plex.

I wanted to check if Plex supports Dolby Vision/Atmos and if there are any pitfalls I need to avoid.

Thanks guys.

Streaming HDR10 / HDR+ / DV is ok

Here’s the catch –

  • Make 100% certain the video is DirectStream / DirectPlayable (NO transcoding / No subtitle burning)

  • The moment the transcoder kicks in for Video transcoding, you lose.

  • The transcoder can engage to handle the audio and convert it while the video is “DirectStream” – you get the output you want.

I’ve ripped several discs, making certain to keep only those tracks I need/want and everything is fine… even on a tiny little DS418j

Seconding ChuckPa … my DS218+ handles 4kDV\HDR just fine as long as the CLIENT supports it natively.

My movies with 4kHDR files all have a 720p/1080p version alternative file as well for those devices that don’t support 4K or HDR. Plex client generally does a good job of picking the appropriate version for playback to avoid transcoding. What might\might not need transcoding will depend on the client support which can be a bit varied (Roku, GoogleTV, iOS, AppleTV, PC, etc).

Thanks for the advice, really appreciated and really helpful.

Thanks for the info, I didn’t know that about the version selection and that’s cool to know. Thanks for the help.
