ADVICE PLEASE: Moving PLEX from my DS214Play to DS918+

Hi,

I have a DS214Play running PLEX and will soon be replacing it with a DS918+ and want to make sure my PLEX library/installation remains intact with all the metadata and settings I have created.

I will be migrating the existing physical disks and putting them into the DS918+ as explained here in Synology guide section 2.1: Migrating between NAS

I am guessing that all the folders and users/accesses will also transfer across seamlessly once I have restored the DSM config file as detailed in the guide.

After performing a successful disk migration I assume I will need to reinstall PLEX to overwrite the 32bit version with the 64bit version. Will this just be a case of overwriting the existing install via the Package Center?

Is there anything else I need to do with PLEX on the 214Play before moving the disks over to the DS918+ ?

Will PLEX and libraries I have created still work ok on my new 918+ if I do the above? Grateful for any advice.

Thanks

  1. Make a backup of your current DSM configruation.
  2. Shutdown normally in DSM.
  3. Move the drives.
  4. In the new system, you’ll start it up and it will beep.
  5. Start the Synology Assistant and have it install (migrate) DSM for the new model (your data is safe)
  6. Connect to it
  7. Control Panel - Backup and Restore - Restore your configuration backup
  8. Reboot
  9. Install the Plex app manually (Package Center - Manual Install). I take care of the rest in the installer.

The Synology Assistant computer app (https://www.synology.com/en-us/support/download ) will help it be found on your network (it loses its IP address during migration)

Their tutorial is here: https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/DSM/tutorial/General/How_to_migrate_between_Synology_NAS_DSM_6_0_and_later

Thanks, just what I thought. Now successfully running PLEX on my +918 (so much faster!)
