After Plex Update - Title of Custom Video Changed to Episode 1

I have some videos from youtube that aren’t on IMDB or anything like that and I renamed it from “Episode 1” to “The Title of the Video” in Plex and with the last update half of the videos reverted back to for example Episode 1".

I have the filename “s01e01 Name of the Episode” I don’t understand why it did this, and does anyone have any suggestions on how to avoid this from happening in the future?

Plex doesn’t read the title of an episode from its file name.

Then you should ensure 2 things:

  1. the checkbox “Empty trash automatically after every scan” in the server settings is clear and remains so, particularly if your media storage is on external hard drives or network file shares
  2. After editing any metadata manually, ensure that the “lock” icon on the input field is engaged. It is not automatically activated if you just paste something in. You need to add another key stroke (or activate with your mouse pointer).

If your video files are in mp4/m4v format, you could also embed the name of the episode into the file itself, as meta tag. Plex can use a few of these internal meta tags in mp4 files.

Thank you so much, I will do that, I’m sure it was the locked issue. When I renamed them I bet you I only locked like half of them. If these don’t work I will work on the meta data.
Thanks again!

Be also extremely cautious when moving, or renaming the files and/or folders of unmatched media. The folder path and the file name is pretty much all that is available to Plex for distinguishing and identifying these files.
Which means if these are changed, the files lose their identity and thus their metadata in plex.

Okay, thank you.

Sorry to bother you again but do you think the Empty Trash idea will help custom posters that are removed at the same time?
I upload a poster to the folder (each Season) and they sometimes disappear and it becomes blank afterwards.

Posters are metadata. If the video gets removed from and subsequently re-added to the library, it can lose all its previous metadata. That includes the poster selection.
Although, if you actually put the poster beside the video files and name it suitably, Plex should pick it up automatically. https://support.plex.tv/articles/200220717-local-media-assets-tv-shows/
You might have to adapt the library settings (on the Advanced tab) so that local posters are preferred.

Just never use the “upload” method directly in the Plex app.

Okay, that’s very helpful, thank you so much for all your help!

So the issue is still happening every couple of days. So my folders are Youtube Videos > (Channel Name) > Season 01 > Season 01.jpg

Every couple of days the posters go to blank of the seasons and if I refresh metadata it brings them back up. I have under the advanced tab "Use Local Assets) checked. Any other ideas on making Plex stop removing these custom posters?

I have “Refresh local metadata every three days” checked in the Scheduled Tasks section in the settings. Do you think if I deselect that, that that will fix the issue?

Remove the space character before the number.

Which agent and scanner did you select in this library again?

Will do thanks. The scanner is Plex TV Series and the Agent is Plex Series
