Hey folks,
I like the Idea of my meadia being available in one app over one server.
The only problem is I love me my music mostly uncompressed as possible.
This is why my music library is in .aiff PLEASE give us native support so that the audio nuts among us can finaly get some rest.
Jamming some nice AIFF on Plex for Mac as I write this, a little Eyes Of The World.
Direct Play PCM stereo thru my SPDIF exclusive link to a DAC.
She’s more than happy with the LPCM we should be able to agree is being sent.
aiff is supported by ffmpeg o.O
nibbles$ ffmpeg -hide_banner -h muxer=aiff
Muxer aiff [Audio IFF]:
Common extensions: aif,aiff,afc,aifc.
Mime type: audio/aiff.
Default video codec: png.
Default audio codec: pcm_s16be.
AIFF muxer AVOptions:
-write_id3v2 <boolean> E.......... Enable ID3 tags writing. (default false)
-id3v2_version <int> E.......... Select ID3v2 version to write. Currently 3 and 4 are supported. (from 3 to 4) (default 4)
The files can contain ID3v2 tags, and Plex read a few of the tags for me, using the embedded artist name rather than the folder name where I put it, a nice surprise.
Am I missing something? This is a new format for me. All my waves are losslessly compressed down to half the size as FLACs. I wouldn’t suggest it when .aiff is working great unless you need the drive space or the verification fingerprints that I use for my collection.
Flac fingerprints are how I realized I had a bad stick of RAM. I was checking all my music once a year, and some tracks wouldn’t verify.
Yes in deed is it possible to play aiff in the mobile app and even on pc the android app (on tv etc.) although does not support it. And for what I understand it is no native support so it gets converted what is not ideal.
@OttoKerner This is mostly correct but my entire Music collection is in AIFF and I dont inted on converting it all
Yeah it might be possible but I am pretty happy with the Format and it took me years to digitalize every Album in my posession. I think the 2 Uncompressed standards (Wave and Aiff) should be supportet. I mean its just a request you know.
OIC it’s the Android Plex App on the TV that doesn’t play AIFF
or that you can see it transcoding.
So you’re concerned, understandably, with the conversion on that TV.
I am too. My entire collection is lossless, stored as FLAC. This is the way.
Several times I’ve understood you to claim there’s no native support on that TV for uncompressed PCM, commonly called a WAV audio file type. That surprised me. If you have a few minutes, could we verify some things?
Absolutely.
When you try to play a 16/44.1 WAV file using the Android Plex app on your TV, you can see it transcoding? Would you please screenshot your Plex Dashboard using a PC showing that and tell us the model # of your TV?
I think we’re really close to what you want without touching your library.
Where I’m headed: a WAV file and an AIF file both contain uncompressed PCM data. They both use signed 16bit values. They write the exact same data, just in opposite order.
One format spells it earth and pronounces it urth.
The other format spell it htrae and pronounces it urth.
The design is that you hear the exact same thing from both of them.
That’s the nature of those two lossless audio file formats.
Because every audio CD was several WAV files, audio players have had WAV support baked in for generations. Can we find it? Can it even be removed?
Ok, honestly I think I only got half of what you were telling me but I give it my best:
TV:
My PC and Cellphone both play the Aiff (even if its not supported [nativly]) my TV app does not.
That baffeld me.
Nativ Support:
So when I read that Plex is able to play aiff even though it is not supported nativly this made me think it has to convert it. (I think I even read somewhere that some formats can be played even when not supported nativly through conversion)
Basicly I would like to play it as loseless as possible and since I dont know what is happening in the backend I would love to see native support.
I need to check if I can see the transcoding part somewhere,
I am not so deep into that topic like you but as I always understood it there are currently only two (common) uncompressed formats. And whilest I know that there are compressions wich are realy good I setteld for uncompressd (aiff) a long while ago and I am pretty happy with the decison. I first went with WAV but WAV had the problem for me that it is not realy capable of storing meta data up to cover art etc. .
In the end it does not matter all that much to me.
Either it is possible to give us native support for aiff or it is not
If not well I guess I will live with it but hey asking is free I guess.
You can check everytime in the Web app, under Status - Dashboard - ‘Show Details’ what is happening in this regard.
Here you can see me playing a 96/24 flac file in Chrome on Windows:
