Airplay Plugin for Plex

Enable Airplay streaming from iDevices to Plex
Hey guys,

I've got an iMac connectet to TV with Plex as a Mediacenter.

The Airplay Option from iPad or iPhone is really a good idea, but I don't want to buy a ATV2 just for Airplay...

Is there a way to get a Airplay-Plugin for the Plex Media Server (If you think of the easy two line code for Airplay activation)

Thanks 4 help!!!

I want what you outline too, but I don't think that it is possible at the moment, because AirPlay on the Mac has not been (and probably will not be) hacked. If Apple allows for it, maybe Plex devs can make PMS stream to the ATV2, probably via QuickTime (implying that Plex would need a new video playback engine). Apparrantly, AirFoil devs Rogue Amoeba is looking to these things as well...

Well ... what are you going to AirPlay to? I mean there are already options to watch Plex media on your iPad and iPhone. AirPlay isn't going to help that. Get the PlexiOS app or Klexi and watch away.

AirPlay is designed to sling video to the AppleTV's and not much else.

+1 for this feature

I don't think you people realize its not going to happen until Apple makes the .api public. The Plex Devs aren't going to include jailbreak-type hacks into their code.

I Want to use the AirPlay Feature As i mentioned above. Just Stream youtube or other video to my mac while browsing the Web with my iPad without getting an extra Device!

This Gould Be awesome

This would be the best for Plex.

I hope it’s possible.

Progress being made outside of Plex in the jailbreak community, and alpha released! Now someone just needs to figure out the best way to integrate this into Plex somehow…

Article:

“An alpha build of AirPlayer, the iOS to Mac AirPlay application, is now available for testing.

The OS X application spoofs your Mac to look like an Apple TV using Bonjour, so jailbreaking—or downloading any additional Cydia application—is not necessary (though, installing AirVideoEnabler is recommended if you want to stream from 3rd party apps).

What AirPlayer does is create and advertise a custom Bonjour AirPlay service that pretends to be an Apple TV. Bonjour is Apple’s zero configuration networking solution for allowing devices and applications to communicate with each other over local area networks. When Apple created AirPlay, it basically set up a new way for Apple TV to interact with iOS using Bonjour communications.

Sadun notes that since Bonjour has been ported to Windows and Linux, it is technically possible for this method to work with other operating systems, but another developer will have to implement it.

Remember, AirPlayer is currently in the alpha stages, so don’t expect it to work flawlessly.

It [has now](http://www.tuaw.com/2010/12/14/hacksugar-mac-based-airplay-service-allows-device-to-mac-playba/).

The dream become true, I would love a plugin who open Airplayer to allow ipad/iPhone video broadcast on my mac mini (plex) connected to my TV.

It worked with video, I am wondering why not with audio only?

I really hope we see this soon (maybe unofficial) in Plex. It's just great to send movies or slideshows (photos) to the big screen.

I think there will be a "channel" only for AirPlay where we could stream audio, video and photos from any iDevice. :)

Yeah, this would be really cool for plex! Hope they integrate it somehow. But I don’t think the source is available from the AirPlayer app from Erica Sadun…

By the way, implementing AirPlay shouldn’t require any “hacks” along the lines of jailbreaking. It appears to be using all standard protocols and such - it’s just a matter of figuring out the details and creating a compatible implementation - which is well underway as posted above (not for Plex, just in general). If Plex were to implement it, it wouldn’t run afoul of anything or cause compatibility issues - like most stuff in Plex, it would just either work or not.

Yes I want Airplay too… here’s why:

So I went to my parents home for the holidays, I have my Plex back at my apt setup for remote access. I get home and I’m watching content on my plex app using wifi… it’s looks great but I’d love to watch it on a larger TV. It would be AMAZING to be able to sling it to an apple TV at my parents home. Sling my content that’s located half way across the country to my parents apple TV via the plex app. WOW.

You misunderstood. What you want must be implemented by Apple in iOS. Or can already be made with a jailbreaked iPhone.
What I want is a "Server" in Plex that can be used to stream to from an iOS device. So I want Plex to behave like an Apple TV 2...

I don't think the PMS needs to be changed. In your scenario, you just want to re-route the video from your iOS device, which is streaming the video from your apartment, to your parents ATV2. So what you would like is the little Airplay option in the Plex iOS app, so you can choose your parent's ATV2 as the playback device.

Without jailbreaking, I don't think this is going to happen until Apple allows 3rd party devs to do that with their appstore apps.

My iPhone is jailbroken and I have the AllPlay hack installed (which allows AirPlay from other apps) but the Plex iOS app still doesn't have that option. So

1. You're correct that the iOS apps (Plex and Klexi) would need to be updated to allow this
2. They won't be until Apple allows it or Apple would probably pull them from the store

Unless I'm mis-reading your intent. You should just buy your parents a MacMini :P

The main limitation with AirPlay right now is stated in the ReadMe from AllPlay:

"It only works on apps that use Apple’s Media Player for playing video. It will not work on apps that use their own implementation of Media Player. "

i would love to see this on plex!
