The current skill is able to play a song , the current skill is able to play an album.
Some of challenges are when the name are duplicated when you have a large library (75K+) tracks this happen a great degree.
Because of the missing criterian the skill will usually find song or album but i have found an issue for these duplicate tracks and the skill will many times respond with:
“I’m sorry i am unable to find or on your plex server.”
I have not seen this in general when the track or album does not have a duplicate based only on the name.
So the request is to add the ability to specify the artist name along with the song and / or album name.
The lack of this ability has driven me crazy since day one and it baffles me why it doesn’t do this.
I currently have no way of asking for “The Man Who Sold the World” by David Bowie vs. the cover by Curt Cobain, “All Along the Watchtower” by Jimi Hendrix or Bob Dylan, “Come Together” by the Beatles or Aerosmith. And good luck with the songs that have been massively recorded like Hallelujah or Yesterday.
And on the subject, why not “Alexa, ask Plex to play song [by artist] [from album_name]”?
Otherwise, there is no way of specifying “Dazed and Confused” from Led Zeppelin vs. The Song Remains the Same. Or did I mean “Dazed and Confused” by Jake Holmes?
Plex - is this something you might implement? Not being able to do this really limits the usefulness of Plex for me. Thanks! - Mike
It’ll be available in our next major update. I don’t have an ETA on when that might ship as we’re still finalizing a few things before we enter certification.
To be clear this was already planned and was going to ship irrespective of this specific thread. A bunch of us internally have wanted the same functionality and we were in a place to make it happen.
Yes - of course - I understand that. (I’ve been a software developer for over 25 years.) I should have said “coincidental” instead of “good.” Anyway, I’m thrilled to have learned that I’m not the only one with this use case. I have my entire library (audio and video) ripped on my NAS and I’ve used media players since the 90’s to play it. The Echoes would have been the perfect progression except for the fact that Amazon wants very badly to rent you the content rather than let you enjoy your own collection built over a lifetime. Thank you for recognizing and working on filling that need. You’re helping a lot of people - even Amazon who will sell more Echoes.
