Aliases for musical artists' names in different languages

When you listen to a musical artist who has a name in a language that has a different writing system (e.g. Japanese, Arabic, Korean), the artist will show in your library separately when their name is in their native language vs. when their name is transliterated to English or another Latin-based language. This makes discovery difficult because you have two different entries for what are effectively the same artist, depending on which version of the name is used by the albums and tracks in your library.

MusicBrainz already holds alias data for artists’ names, so to fix this problem, all Plex would have to do is implement this data. For example, if you have a track that credits 竹内まりや and another track that credits Mariya Takeuchi, they would both be attributed to the same artist. Ideally, this should also come with a way for the person to select which alias to display as the main one for an artist, as some might only be able to read the name when it’s romanized.

Sounds like some of your files might contain conflicting embedded metadata that’ll result in the artist showing up as a different person/group (1x original name, 1x transliterated/translated)

2025 clean-up: abandoned, also there’s a separate suggestion discussing for Plex to deal with translated/transliterated artist names (duplicate)
