I’ve been trying to upgrade to any version of Media Server v.1.18.x, but the update causes my server to become “unreachable” to the web interface.
I’ve been using Plex for many years, and this is the most serious and extended version failure I’ve yet come across.
I understand from searching the forums that this is the result of a new music scanner that does enhanced metadata searches for an ‘improved’ music experience.
I have a large library of music… 160k+ tracks.
The first time I did the ‘in-place’ upgrade, it pegged my CPU for over a day and the system was ‘unreachable’ the entire time.
Naturally my family and users rebelled and I reverted to v.1.17 and everything was fine again.
I’ve continued to try each of the v.1.18.x updates as they are released, checking in every few days. All cause the same “server unreachable” condition.
Eventually as a last resort (I didn’t want to lose all my music play history, but I bit the bullet) I completely removed ALL my music libraries from the system and upgraded to v.1.18.
That seemed to work, as the system remained online.
I gradually re-introduced my music libraries and let the meta information build… seemed to be going ok. Then yesterday the system was once again became ‘unreachable’.
Standard troubleshooting like restarting the server made no impact. Didn’t see any smoking gun in the log files.
Sigh…
So I’ve restored my server to v.1.17 and all is well again.
At this point I expect I’ll be leaving it at v.1.17 until I see some major announcement that all has been fixed.
My request to Plex Developers is simple:
Before introducing MAJOR changes to the way people’s libraries are catalogued, make it an OPTIONAL feature and NOTIFY the end user that it will cause them to be offline for extended periods.
Or ideally just debug it thoroughly before release to your installed base of customers.
Not everyone wants to spend days and days doing troubleshooting and reverting to previous versions. This is driving me to Netflix and Spotify, I can tell you that much.
Tech stuff:
Server running on a dual Xeon (16 cpu) Windows 10 Professional and 24 gig of RAM.
500gb SSD C: drive for OS and Apps, multiple direct attached SATA drives for media.
