All my 4k content gets transcoded all of the sudden

Server Version: 1.32.8.7639
Player Version: Plex for Samsung 5.74.0, platform version 6.

I have played 4k movied for more than a year now but all of the sudden they get transcoded. When I show the info overlay the reason for transcoding is: Video bitrate is greater than allowed quality setting.

So I though the reason was that the tv is somehow not considered “local” anymore. But when I play the movie and in look in the plex dashboard it says “Local (192.168.100.xxx) - 4 Mbps” so it seems plex considers it local.

What I have tried so far:

  • Ïn the server settings under ‘quality’’ changed both local and remote quality to “maximum”. No effect.
  • Turned off the srt subtitles. No effect.
  • Under network set ‘Lan Network’ to “192.168.100.0/24”. No effect.
  • In the plex app settings, under “video” I have “local quality” set to “original”, “Maximum Remote Quality” set to “Unlimited” and tested with “Disable Bitrate Limiting” checked and unchecked. No effect.

I rebooted both plex server and the tv after making changes.

Perhaps worth to mention, my PMS is on a Ubuntu server running as a Docker image with “host” network.

Hope someone can help me. Regards,
Thijs

Ok, nevermind… apparently I set the quality to 4Mbps in the player at some point for some movie. And now all movies and series had this as a fixed quality. Changed it back to “original quality” for one movie and then all the others were direct streaming again as well.
I didn’t expect this “global” effect when changing the quality while playing a movie. Don’t think it was there before. Also think the reason for transcoding shown is very misleading. But in the end we can chalk this down as a user error I guess. Problem solved.
